Hector Ramos Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Hector Ramos gave his mother, Nancy, a green teddy bear when he left for Iraq, telling her, "You can hug the bear and think about me." His tour of duty matured him. When he called from Iraq and his mother suggested he rest because he had a fever, he assured her he was "not a wimp." "I'm a man and I'm a Marine," his mother recalled him saying. "I'm going to do what I have to go do." Ramos, 20, of Aurora, Ill., was among the 31 killed Jan. 26 when a helicopter crashed in bad weather in Iraq. He was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The 2003 high school graduate was inspired to join the Marines after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. "When 9/11 happened, the first day he went to go sign up. He came home from school, and he told me, 'I signed up. I need to do this. I always wanted to,'" Nancy Ramos said. In high school, he was a "sheer ball of energy" with a passion for art and theater. "He was constantly smiling," said school district spokesman Clayton Muhammad. "He was the kind of kid who wanted to help save the world."

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we have made a small donation to Hector Ramos Memorial Scholarship at the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley to honor and remember Hector Ramos US Marine Lance Corporal. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals across the American youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Hector, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

In a little more than a week it will be 4 years. I look back on it and it seems like both ages ago and yesterday.
I know, like you, I do not go a day without thinking not only of my son but of all those that died that day.
I also think about those that did not that day and the feelings that they may have for surviving and going on with their lives.
I’m sorry that I have never written before. I guess it was not my time to do so.
Out of all that died that day I only knew Mike, but they were all brothers and because of that, they were all, my son’s.
The tears that I shed for him I shed for all.

Dear family of Lance Cpl. Hector Ramos,

We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.

Very Sincerely

Frank G. Noyes

I never got the chance to personally meet you, but your mother and brothers and friends have told me so many great things about you. As an alumni and guestwriter for the East High school newpaper, I recently did a story on you, I hope I did you justice. I made your mom cry...I didn't mean to. I will pray for your brother Noah's safe return, he is in Japan right now. And I will gladly support and encourage little Isaiah as he continues his journey through high school. He's a great kid too! Thanks fellow Tomcat for your sacrifice!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Hector Ramos is my brother. Like him, I also am a United States Marine. I was in bootcamp at the time of his death. I knew he was in Iraq. And I knew he was in harms way. The entire time we were both trying to mail eachother letters. But being in bootcamp, i never got to get his address. And when I finally got it, it was the day before he died. When I found out he died, every emotion i held within in bootcamp came out. Anger, Tears, Frustration. you name it, and it was out. so i went home on Emergency leave and mourned with my family. it was tough to be back hom and missing a member of the Family. His funeral was a HEROE's funeral. I have never seen so many people gather around to honor someone who gave up his life to provide freedom. when i got back to bootcamp, i had 4 letters from him. each letter was one day after the other. he wrote his letters 4 days prior to his last breath. when i read his letter, it made me laugh, but sad again because i knew i would never get another letter. i finally got his address and never got to write back. he was young and full of life. he had a future. i will always love him and remember him. I am now in IRAQ and i am here to finish his fight. OORAH and SEMPER FI Brother.

To the family of LCpl Ramos. I did not know Hector but I know the cloth he was cut from because he was and always will be one of the Few, one of the Proud, a Marine. I lost one of my Marines 30 Oct. 2005. Coming up on a year now and still as raw as the night the CACO showed up at my door. I thank God every day for the memories and the love that we shared and you will too. Hold on to those memories for you will find that they are the most precious possession you will have. Hector is a hero to so many. May God Bless and comfort you in this unwelcomed journey.

To the Family of Lance Cpl. Hector Ramos:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son (SFC Brent A. Adams) 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

To the family of Lance Cpl. Hector Ramos

I cannot begin to imagine the pain you are suffering. I also have a son serving in Iraq and my heart hangs by a string each time I hear of recent casualties. Each day I pray and plead with God that he returns, But if this were not to be, I then hold fast to the promised resurrection Jesus foretold at John 5:28&29. I also look forward to a time in the near future when "Jehovah will call the nations into judgement and set matters straight and they will have to beat the swords into plowshares and spears into pruning shears, and nations will not learn war anymore." (Isaiah 2:4)

Rejoice in the hope that we will have the opportunity to embrace our dear loved ones again.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Hector. I did not know him personally, however I feel as if I lost part my extended family. My daughter's fiancee, Lcpl. Fred Maciel was on the chopper with Hector. Times like these make us so profoundly sad...yet so profoundly proud. We lost so much on January 26, 2005 and I know that the emptiness will be with us for a long time to come. However please take comfort in knowing that your family is in our prayers everyday. Our loved ones are heros and I personally find solice in knowing that they are in a better place. May God bless your family and may you find peace in knowing that someday you will be reunited with Hector.

With much love and saddness,
