Vorn J. Mack Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Pfc. Vorn J. Mack was roughly 5-foot-3 and 115 pounds when Sgt. Andre Boler saw him for the first time at Fort Carson in March. "I thought he was someone''s little brother, he was so young and little," Boler said. But that made no difference: "He was a great soldier." Mack would often cheer up soldiers with a cigarette or a story, Boler said. The 19-year-old Mack drowned Aug. 23 near the Hadithah Dam in Iraq. The computer analyst was from Orangeburg, S.C. Mack began basic training a month after graduation from high school in 2002, his aunt Brinder Hicks said. He was one of five children, and one sister is in the Army in Kuwait. "He was a little man with a big heart," Hicks said.

Vorn it has been 17 years and not a day goes by that I dont think about you. We went to highschool together and you and I were known as the two shortest guys in the school. I remember times people would call me you but I was far from having your spirit buddy. You were kind and full of love and never a dull moment. Your memories live on. We love you class of 2002

I was Vorn's squad leader/ First Line NCO. I want to apologize to all who knew and loved him especially his family for taking so long to speak about who he was. His death had a very large impact on me and still does but that is no excuse once again I'm deeply sorry for taking this long. Mack was our little brother when he first got to the unit we thought we thought he was out of place we were hard chargers for sure back in those days and days before we deploy this small happy go lucky kid shows up with his two battle buddies. I feared he was in the wrong unit out of place man was I wrong. Mack quickly became known throughout the unit for choking people out in spontaneous wrestling matches (especially NCO's). He almost even got me once and at the time I was about 6'1 215 and probably one of the fittest Soldiers in the squadron. Within a week we knew he was as tough, determined and possessed as much heart as anyone in the squadron. During deployment he represented the best of us his potential started to really shine through. He was brave, eager, and a true testament to what it means to be a Soldier. We were deployed in probably the worst area in Iraq and no matter what they thew at us Mack remained unrattled. I remember one day I was heading out on mission and Mack was returning from outside the wire we crossed paths and he was covered in a white substance. I asked him what he was covered in and he told me fire retardant. Insurgents had shot up his humvee on the way back and a round hit the fire extinguisher bolted under his seat. He causally recounted the attack to me while he smoked a cigarette like a 25 year combat vet. I asked him if he was ok he smiled and said yup sergeant put out his cigarette and went back to work. Thats the Soldier Mack was beyond his years in courage, heart, determination, and any other quality that makes a Soldier. We all loved him so much I don't think there was a Soldier in the squadron who's life he didn't touch in a positive way. We loved and still love him like our little brother. Mack was the best of us.

Little brother rest in peace we still tell your story when ever we cross paths and to every one of our Soldiers and friends we have met along the way. I miss you.

?8 yrs ago today, a son, brother, nephew, cousin, friend and Soldier was taken from this earth to serve the all Mighty above. Although our hearts ache and our tears come unexpectedly, we know his purpose was served here on God's green earth and his soul lives on in an Angel form. Vorn James Mack, my brother and comrade I love and miss you more each day, may you rest in peace. Love Dawn.

I served along side Reginald Abrham as one of Macks's squad leaders. We deployed together but did not physically return together. I still believe that Mack is walking along side us in our Army journey. Keeping us safe as we continue to deploy and redeploy. I brag to all my fellow soldiers of how great Mack was. How they should strive to be like him. We all miss you Mack and pray for your family.

”Honor and Remember” - “Project Compassion” We love our Soldiers! We love our country and we cannot express enough love and compassion to the families of our fallen heroes. War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Almost 2,000 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have some wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and only want you know that we care.
Contact us directly at [email protected] or go to www.heropaintings.com . If you have already had a portrait completed, we pray that you are enjoying the portrait and God Bless You.
Sincerely and Respectfully,
Kenna

I knew PFC Mack during OIF 1. I met him while guarding his RETRANS site. We had 24 hours of guard and boredom during which PFC Mack talked about his family and his purple suit often. He said he couldn't wait to get back to both. I am proud to have known him and sad to this day that his bright flame was extinguished so early. He's the kind of man we still talk about to this day when we tell war stories to our new soldiers. He was dedicated and hardworking, and never let it get to him. Every soldier I knew was glad to serve with him, and even gladder to see him the next time we had to work with him. Mack, you'll never be forgotten as long as I breathe. May the Lord God Bless you and keep you. May he always shine his light upon you

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Vorn, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

It is difficult to know what to write since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Pfc Mack. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Pfc Mack!

I didn't personally know you or your family, but saw this terrible news online and felt compelled to say something! - Thank you for your service to our country and keeping me and my family safe, secure and free - You paid the ultimate price for my freedom with your life and I am forever grateful - A simple thank you seems so little at a time like this - I pray for the family and friends you left behind and hope that they can somehow find peace at this very difficult time - God Bless you and all who knew you.

I went to school with Vorn in Orangeburg. He was the trainer for the soccer team while I was a member. He definitely wasn't a very big guy, but he was a wonderful gentleman with a big heart. I remember taking him home after one of the games and having him tell my brother and I that we didn't have to drive all the way. We refused to make him walk that far, that late. Vorn was a funny guy. I didn't know it when he was around me every afternoon, five days a week on the soccer field, but I found out the day he died that I would not only remember him for the rest of my life, I would miss him dearly.
