Steven D. Conover Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Sgt. Steven D. Conover shared stories with the family about the dangers in Iraq, including one in which a Humvee blew up in front of him and killed a man Conover had trained with. "He was the sergeant, so he had to prepare the man for sending him home to his wife and children. That affected him greatly," said his stepfather, Michael Earley. Conover, 21, was among 16 soldiers killed in the Nov. 2 downing of an Army helicopter carrying soldiers home on leave. He was stationed at Fort Sill. "They were ambushed quite often, and he just said he knew the hand of God was on him," Earley said. "Now, he was on his way home, but he got to go all the way home. My boy was a Christian, and I know he's in heaven right now." Conover, of Wilmington, Ohio, graduated from high school in 2000 and attended Laurel Oaks Career Development Campus, where he studied aviation. He was a cadet officer in Laurel Oaks' Air Force Junior ROTC program. "I saw him as a very mature, genuinely nice guy that automatically, when he spoke, other people listened," ROTC instructor Howard Vosburgh said. "His fellow students looked up to him. I admired him. He was just a cut above his peers." He is also survived by his mother, Lorraine Earley.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Conover Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Steven D. Conover US Army Specialist. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

”Honor and Remember” - “Project Compassion” We love our Soldiers! We love our country and we cannot express enough love and compassion to the families of our fallen heroes. War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Over 1,850 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have some wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and only want you know that we care.
Contact us directly at [email protected] or go to www.heropaintings.com . If you have already had a portrait completed, we pray that you are enjoying the portrait and God Bless You.
Sincerely and Respectfully,

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Steven, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

"Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the Gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the mornings hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die."

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Spc Conover. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Spc Conover knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Spc Conover!

To the family of Steven. I was a very good friend of Steven. I met him in Vernon with my good friend Stephen Nail. Conover was a very special person. He touched a lot of lives in the places that he went to. He had the most amazing personality that I have ever come across. He had such a big heart. He would go out of his way to make his friends happy. I am proud to have known Conover and to be one of his friends. I'm so sorry that the family has to live this day everyday. Just be thankful for the time you had with him. He told me a little bit about his family and he loved y'all very much. That was what our last conversation was about. FAMILY. God Bless

I have so much sympothy for Steven Daniel Conover's family for thier loss. He was also a loss to me as well. You have raised a very nice young man. You see Steven was a very good friend of mine and i miss him dearly. he knew how to make people laugh, that was one thing he knew how to do was make everyones day brighter. I have memories from when he use to go bowling with me and my boyfriend Steven Wayne Nail who was his best fiend. They were inseperable. I even remember the day before he left Fort Sill he had shown me the gear he was going to wear at war. He also promised another game of bowling to give me another chance to beat him. But i never got that chance. He was a good friend to my family. He even had a baby boy with my sister on December 9, 2003 who also in which he passed away on the 11th of december year of 2003. A little over a month Steven passed. It was a very hard thing to loose him and my nephew so close together. But i kno that my nephew is up in Heaven with his daddy. He had Steven's bright blue eyes and all of his features. I miss them both so much. This November 2nd would be his 4th year anniversery that he passed away. And December 11th would be my nephews (his sons)Steven Daniel Conover 2nd (just like his dad) 4th year as well to have gone to be with his dad. I love you my dear friend and could never forget all the memories we have shared. You will forever be in my heart. Please take good care of my Mijo. I also love you too Mijo so much it hurts that we didn't have much time together, but i also know that GOD had chosen you for a reason and maybe that reason was for you to be with your great HERO DAD. Love You Guys.
