Raphael S. Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Spc. Raphael S. Davis and his older brother joined the Mississippi National Guard under the buddy system and were both called to duty in Iraq. But Davis'' girlfriend, another guard member, stayed behind to gave birth to the couple''s first child. Two weeks later, Davis called his father to say he was coming home. "I never heard him sound so happy," Clifton Bailey said. "He told me he was coming home. We all assumed he meant Tutwiler, but he knew he was going to his heavenly home. He was calling me to say goodbye." Davis, 24, of Tutwiler, Miss., was killed Dec. 2 when an explosive device ripped through the Humvee he was driving in a convoy in Tampa, Iraq. His death came less than a month after his girlfriend, Deetra Tucker, gave birth to a boy, Razavier Seon. Davis also had two other children, 6-year-old Raphael Jr. and 5-year-old Ravin. While serving in the guard, Davis had studied engineering at Holmes Community College and worked at a Circuit City. "As a soldier, student and member of this community, he was top-notch," said Col. Ruyel West, who led Davis into battle.

I never saw or met him, but we shared the same name, rank, age and we're at the same base in Iraq. I've always felt something since the day I heard the news at our base in tallil. I prayed for him then and now.

This year will be 15 years since Spc Raphael Davis lost his life in Iraq, and 12 years that I've been holding onto a yellow ribbon with his name on it. I went to a memorial flag ceremony in Tempe, Arizona, where a full-size flag was planted for each of the 3,000+ service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice since 9/11. I bought one of those flags, each adorned with a yellow ribbon holding the name and info of the service member that flag honored. I chose your son, brother, father, partner, cousin and nephew. I think of him often and wonder how his family is managing without him. I wanted you to know that a complete stranger was affected by your loss, and I have not forgotten the sacrifice he and his family has made. God bless you all...

Spc. Raphael Davis I want to thank you for your service to not only the United States as a country but to me your children as a father.

”Honor and Remember” - “Project Compassion” We love our Soldiers! We love our country and we cannot express enough love and compassion to the families of our fallen heroes. War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Over 1,800 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have some wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and only want you know that we care.
Contact us directly at [email protected] or go to www.heropaintings.com . If you have already had a portrait completed, we pray that you are enjoying the portrait and God Bless You.
Sincerely and Respectfully,
Kenna

I was in Kuwait while you were in Iraq. Since the 223rd had so many units in MS it seemed like I always came across someone from your battalion. When a soldier doesnt come home with the rest, it hurts. I didnt know you personally but I feel like I do because I had friends and classmates in your group. Someone I know was in the convoy with you the day God called you home and it affected him deeply. We shared more than just the same home state--we shared the desire to serve, to make our homeland a better place. RIP SPC Davis. You are gone but definitely not forgotten.

Our continued thoughts and prayers out to the DAVIS family,Knowing now what they have always known is one of many reasons that our HERO[ES] shall NEVER be forgotten,Rest well brother as prommised that star spangled banner shall FOREVER wave,Your name stamped in steel shall be FOREVER clutched in the tallons,as your spirit FOREVER soars high in the skies in the symbol of our great nation,..THANK..YOU.....B.V.C...

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I lost my son, Sgt. Jason W. Vaughn, on 10 May 2007 in Iraq. I always felt sorrow for every fallen soldier and their families before I lost my son; now I know the agonizing pain each family goes through. It's amazing how our worlds have come to a crashing halt, but everything else keeps going on. I am so sorry. May God bless you!

It's been 3 years now, & I've finally built up the courage to post a message. I was a member of the 223rd also, however, I didn't go to Iraq. I was placed in the same holding unit Deetra was placed in to have her baby. My heart was really hurt to hear about Raphael's passing. I remember before the unit left, we all went bowling & had so much fun, of course Raphael and the other guys from his unit kicked our butts!! All I can say is that he will be missed dearly. I've often thought about the family over the past 3 years & pray that the peace that passes all understanding has consumed them. I will continue to pray for the family and if there is ever anything I can do, let me know.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

If you need anything, please feel free to contact me!!!

There isn't a day that goes by when I don't think about my classmate and friend, Raphael. I think everyone here agrees that the last two years without him have been tough. Even though his loss has left a huge void in our community, I always think of him with a smile. I know that you are up there in Heaven smiling down on us and we love you and miss you so much. We'll see you when we reach that other shore, Raph.

I don't know you and I don't know who your family is but you come from my home town area. I was touched by your picture and your story. I said a prayer for your family and your children. May God continues to watch over them for you.

God Bless!
