Ricky L. Crockett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
After 20 years in the Army, Staff Sgt. Ricky L. Crockett was looking forward to serving out his remaining time in Iraq so he could retire from the military the summer of 2004. One activity was definitely on his plate. "He liked to cook for us _ he liked to cook greens and mostly everything, he loved to cook hog chitlins," said his sister, Catherine Brockington. "He liked to make pecan pies." Crockett, 38, of Broxton, Ga., was killed Jan. 12 in Baghdad by an improvised explosive device. He was was stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. Samantha Crockett, another sister, said he had many friends. "He was all smiles," she said. "Everybody got along with him. I don''t think he had an enemy." His survivors include his wife, Megan Crockett of Fayetteville, N.C., and his 14-year-old daughter, Marvise. "I''m going to remember him with his big smile ... he always had an uplifting spirit," Brockington said.

I served with him at Ft. Bragg 1997 to 1998. He was still an E5 at the time, and I was an E4. Learned alot from him, and I always loved his mannerism and the way he carried himself. I'll always remember Sgt. Crockett. RIP always your brother in green.

As I sit here today I'm thinking of you as usual, not a day goes by that you are not on my mind. As I prepare to go to Arlington Va next week to honor you it get hard at times because I can't see your smiling face that lights up the room, but I know that you are there because you're in my heart. Gone but not forgotten.

To the family of Staff Sgt Ricky Crockett,

Tho he is no longer with you, may he always be with you. Especially when you are cooking and family get together. But also in those quiet times when you are alone with him. Always remember the smiles that lights up the room. That's him smiling down at you. May God bless you.

On this Memorial Day I am taking the time to remember a few dear friends who I have had the pleasure of serving with. They have provided me with words of wisdom dealing with my military career. Today is just like yesterday when I opened up the Armytimes and saw your face (Ricky)I had to email all that we where station with in Hawaii and Bragg to let them know after talking to your wife. Know that we miss your big heart of gold and your wonderful smile. YOU served with HONOR and went home with HONOR when your family called you home yet it' hard for us to deal with because it was too early. We all know that you are smiling down at us plus there is not much going on here on earth....gas is high...and the stock market is not going well. You have no worries walking the streets of gold. By the way I have two dear friend from my company who joined you on 5 Jun 2008....JC Carter and McNair...I know they too are enjoying the wings given to them. To your family if they visit this site...Know that Ricky Crockett who I know as SSG Crockett is loved by many. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

In Memory of Ricky ~ (Debra Estep)

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ricky, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Staff Sgt Crockett. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Staff Sgt Crockett knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Staff Sgt Crockett!

May the Peace of the Lord be with the Crockett family.
There will never be enough ways, to humbly thank these Heroes, for their Supreme Sacrifice, my brother among them. KIA-Vietnam 1967.

"And God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes,
there shall be no more death,
nor sorrow, nor crying,
there shall be no more pain.
For the former things have have passed away."

I have just learned of the death of SSG Ricky L. Crockett. As the State Chaplain of the Georgia Sons Of The American Revolution and speaking for our President, George Thurmond and more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia, may I most humbly express the condolences of a grateful Society. SSG Crockett, wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, stood on a wall of freedom for us all. His life and his love of country epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe him ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… his family!!!
