Raymond E. Jones Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Raymond E. Jones Jr. was an outgoing youngster who excelled in school but joined the Army before completing college. Though he liked the military life, his father, Raymond Jones Sr. said, he didn't talk of war. Staff Sgt. Jones, 31, was killed April 9 by a rocket-propelled grenade attack while on patrol. He was stationed in Germany. The Gainesville, Fla., native was "outgoing, smiling, joking" during his student years, his father said. He also was a high school wrestler, and showed miniature horses. Jones finished his first year at the University of Florida before enlisting in the Army in 1991. Other survivors include his wife, Kateia, and mother.

Your sacrifice was not in vain. For 20 years our country was protected by brave soldiers such as yourself. My family appreciates you and all the others who fought beside you. May your family find peace in your sacrifice.

First, I am praying for the dear loved ones left behind and may God fill the void that is the shape of you Mr. Raymond E. Jones, Jr. With His amazing Love and Strength as they grow without you. But You will be remembered always.

Second, I found out about this loss while researching my own Jones Family Line. Was his Father Perhaps related to a Herman Elbert Jones III? Please email me your Address as I would love to make you a handmade card and an afghan in Raymond's favorite color as an Heirloom and an appreciation for all the sacrifices which have given me the freedoms I now enjoy.

You see, my own father H. E. Jones III (Affectionately Called "Pops") served 3 tours in Vietnam and earned four Purple Hearts. Also, his whole platoon had Agent orange dumped on them. I now myself suffer the effects of that wartime Nerve Toxin.

My father had an uncle that lived in Hollywood, Florida. His name is Robert Jones.

I wanted to pay tribute and say thanks to Ray for his service in this fight for freedom that is so often taken for granted by the very people he was fighting for. Ray graduated high school with me and though we lost contact after we started our 'adult lives' I will always have fond memories of my classmate from SFHS Class of 1990 sfhs90.com

You will never be forgotten friend. Your sacrifice will never be understood, and as God rejoices in your homecoming we will look forward to seeing you again upon ours.

Father we entrust our brother Raymond to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Raymond in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathies.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

A Multitude of Thanks, to this Brave Young Soldier, who gave his life for our Country and for Freedom. Thank you for your Courage, and your unselfish Dedication and Many Years of Service.
Rest In Peace Sgt. 1st Class Raymond E. Jones, in the Loving Care of God and may the Peace of God be with the Jones family.

Those who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice, So Many and So Young, shall Never Be Forgotten, my brother among them. Killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.

Treasure this hero Lord, in Your Garden of Rest,
for while here on earth, he was one of our best.

I am sincerely hoping that you continue to feel the thoughts of caring and support that surround you each day, as this Country remembers someone very precious to you, who is a Hero to all of us.
I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

Ray,

It’s been over a year since that unfortunate day. I find myself thinking of you often. Often I miss you smile, looking up at your tall self and I so vividly remember our conversations etc. Time continuously moves, people move forward with their lives, and wounds heal. I want you and all to know, that although things have changed, the fond memories I have of you still remain. I hope you are well and in heaven and watching over us. I am sorry I could not watch over you while you were here, with us. I find peace in knowing that we shall all meet again. Till that day, you will forever be a part of my life and your memory will forever live on through me.
