To the family of PFC Leroy Harris-Kelly:
Please know that just as your loved one remains in your hearts and minds; his sacrifice, and that of your family, remains with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God bless and keep you always.

As the Supply Sergeant of the 596th Maintenance Company, I personally knew PFC Harris-Kelley and live everyday accepting the fact that the 42 minutes of CPR that I and a handful of other enlisted soldiers and officers in his company, administered to him on that fateful day during an unexpected sandstorm which caused his truck to overturn, caused injuries far greater than any one of the countless soldiers who reacted instantaneously that day to save his life and that of his co-driver SSG Worthen, could have possibly repaired. I do know that he would be honored to know the efforts given to save his life were relentless as we felt we were a family unit and were faced with the possibility of losing one of our own. My deepest sympathies reach out to his family and friends. His sense of duty and committment to his unit, his hilarious impersonations of Michael Jackson, and the love and devotion he displayed for his wife and daughter are his lasting legacy. His memory remains with me, as I am certain it does with all those who served with him, and on the eve of the 5th anniversary of the ultimate sacrifice he paid, PFC Harris-Kelley, I Salute You. It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Pfc Harris-Kelly. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Pfc Harris-Kelly knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Pfc Harris-Kelly!

Hello, I want you all to know that Leroy was a great man, I served with him in 596th Maint and was there when the accident happened, it haunts me in my memories everyday. I'am so sorry to the family of this fallen Soldier. I spoke to him the night before his final convoy and we smoked a black and mild and sat outside the sleeping quarters talking about going home and what we were gonna do.. I remember him saying he couldnt wait to see his baby.Once again iam very sorry about your lose and wish i could have done more to stop it.

I had just stumbled apon this and realized that I remember PFC Harris-Kelly. I never actually knew him closely, but I did have a few conversations with him from time to time. I was in his unit in the Mannheim Detatchment MST-1. I also remember that he was a very nice guy, with a good attitude everytime. I do remember hearing about his incident while we were in Iraq, but due to the fact that I hardly knew him I could not put a name to the face. I'm deeply sorry if that sounds bad, but I certainly do not mean it. I see who PFC Harris-Kelly is and I am deeply impacted by it. To see a fallen Comrade, well known or not, in the field or at home is a hard thing to take. I am deeply sorry for his family's loss and wish the best of luck to his wife and daughter.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know 'Kelly', but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.
Sincerely,

I didn't personally know you or your family, but saw this terrible news online and felt compelled to say something! - Thank you for your service to our country and keeping me and my family safe, secure and free - You paid the ultimate price for my freedom with your life and I am forever grateful - A simple thank you seems so little at a time like this - I pray for the family and friends you left behind and hope that they can somehow find peace at this very difficult time - God Bless you and all who knew you

PFC Harris-Kelly was the first person to befriend me my very first night I arrived on Camp Doha, Kuwait. I was a SPC at the time. I met him at the gym that night and we must have played basketball until midnight, he loved basketball. I gave him the nickname "And One", because he had moves and tricks just like the guys from the streetball series. Even though we were in different units from different posts, our friendship could always be seen.
"Kelly" as we called him, was one of the most charasmatic people I've ever met in my life. He had the ability to not only grab your attention but hold it. He always carried around a picture of his wife and daughter Alexis. In between basketball games we would sit on the sidelines and talk about what we were going to do when we got back home. He was so proud of being a father.
I remember the last conversation we had before he took off to Fallujah. He said he was only gonna be gone for two weeks and he'd be back down in order to get ready to leave, going back to Germany. I told him to work on his jumpshot while he was gone. I met Kelly Aug. 12, 2003. He was a good Soldier, and an even better friend. I am glad to have crossed paths with such a person. I will miss him dearly.

I was right there when this young man died. I was one of the medical technicians on that night when he came into the airforce emergency room tent. I will never forget that day that he passed away. I remember going through his army uniform that he was wearing for identification and finding a bible and a picture of his wife and child and ill never forget what the minister said to the army personnel. He said "'you make sure that Leroy's family know that I was right there at his side when he went into heaven.........." I feel everyday for his wife, baby, friends, and family........
