Michael S. Torres Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
This fall, Cathedral High School''s football players will each wear a small number 81 on their uniforms. That was Michael S. Torres'' jersey number. "I would like all my young players to act like him," said head football coach, David Portillo. "He was a fine young man." Torres, 21, of El Paso, Texas, died July 5 during fighting in Anbar province. He was based at Twentynine Palms, Calif. After Torres'' death, his mother was reminded just how well-liked he was. "You wouldn''t imagine the outpouring of people from all over the country who are calling and coming to bid him goodbye," Rossana Esparza said. Esparza said she managed to speak to her son before his death. "We just talked about how we missed each other and how much he missed everyone here and how he was trying to do his part in keeping the war away from our homeland," Esparza said. "He wanted to extend our freedoms to other people." Torres also is survived by his father and a fiancee.

Hello,

We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Michael S. Torres US Marine Lance Corporal.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

My son, seven years without your smile, your presence, your humor. I would give everything to just hold you again. There is not a single day that goes by without thinking of you. I look forward to when you see you, in heaven. Until then I will continue to think of, and miss you. I love you, son.

Thinking of you Michael....You did not know me, but I knew your father....I have worn the bracelet with your name on it for the last 6-1/2 years...through four deployments, about to carry it over there again. I have told your fellow Marines about you when they have come through my ICU or when I have transported them on CCATT....You are there with us, with all of us, every single day. You are of us, as we are of you. Rest well, bro.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Lance Cpl Torres. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Lance Cpl Torres knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Lance Cpl Torres!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Michael, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

Eternal rest grant unto Michael, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace. May Michael's soul
and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Father we entrust our brother Michael to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Michael in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

If your child can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron (a dear friend) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
