John J. Vangyzen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Despite returning home from a war zone, John J. Vangyzen had no intention of taking it easy. Vangyzen, who served his first tour from early 2003 to October, went back to Iraq in February, but he and his father managed to cram in some quality time doing some pretty dangerous things. "We had a blast. We went bungee jumping together," said John Vangyzen III. "It wasn''t son and father. It was dude and dad." Vangyzen, 21, of Bristol, Mass., died July 5 in fighting in Anbar province. He was based at Twentynine Palms, Calif. Vangyzen enlisted in the Marines while he was still in high school. He planned to re-enlist in the military police, in hopes of one day joining the Massachusetts State Police, his stepmother, Jane Vangyzen, said. Vangyzen is also survived by his wife, Amanda, and mother, Dorothy Arsenault. "He''s a hero just like all the soldiers that died in Iraq," his father said.

Though it has been 8 years since John's passing, I would like to offer my sorrow for this. He will forever be in the hearts and minds that did not even know him, when we celebrate every patriotic holiday in his hometown.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know John, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

John,
Thinking and praying for you on the 4th anniversary of your passing into eternal glory. May God hold you in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Where does it come from, this spirit of sacrifice? And isn’t it a well that seems never to dry? I have wondered and wondered and the best that I can figure is that it comes from John and his fellows who stand in a long, unbroken line reaching back in time and out to us now. From that chain of heroes issues the call. It is a call heard only by a few but they have always been enough. Rest easy young hero. Today I will toast to you and everyday I will remember your sacrifice.

Another Fallen Hero ~

My heart breaks as I sign another guestbook of such a courageous soldier who gave his life so selflessly. May he rest in peace knowing that he is loved and remembered by those who knew him. From one military family to another, we know the pain you feel, we understand what you are experiencing and feeling. No amount of words can ease the pain of our loss and we know first hand, there are no words of comfort at this time. We lost our only son 9-3-2004 at the age of 19 and it fells like yesterday. Just know that there are Marines and families across the USA who is experiencing your loss and pain. We will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. Our sons grew up, chose to serve our country and in that moment became a hero, a patriot. Their legacy will remain as such.

May God grant you peace, strength and comfort in such a difficult time. My prayers and deepest condolences go out to the entire family.

I still fly my Marine flag and have my Marine tag and sticker on my vehicles because I am PROUD of my SON and DAUGHTER, and all the SERVICE MEN and WOMEN out there. We will always be a MARINE. We are proud of you all.
“Land of the Free, Because of the Brave” Semper Fi - Marines!

Thank you Legacy.com for setting up this website so families can quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves across this great nation.

Father we entrust our brother John to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold John in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

I was Vangyzen's team leader during his first tour in Iraq. He was a good Marine and served his country proudly. I am terribly sorry for your family's loss and at the same time honored to have served with him.

Godspeed and Semper Fidelis Devil!

If your child can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron (a dear friend) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

John,

You stood by my side on Sept. 11, 2001,when we heard the news of the terrorist attacks, you couldn't wait to get home to call your recruiter. I always said you would be the person I would always remember when some one ask do I remember what I was doing that day.I always thought what a terrible day, but the most devestating day was when Beth and your mom called to tell me you had been killed. You have left such an imprint in my life, for giving your life to keep me and my family and friends safe, I thank you and your family for being so courageous. You will always live in my memory.
