Nachez Washalanta Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Judge Tom Walker first met Nachez Washalanta in unhappy circumstances. The young man came into his court in trouble with the law again. But Walker, a brigadier general with the U.S. Army Reserve, said he got to see Washalanta evolve into an admirable young man and a U.S. Marine. "His life _ as short as it was _ is worthy of admiration and emulation," Walker said in a eulogy. "He could have chosen the easy path. ... But rather he chose the hard road." Washalanta, 21, of Bryan, Okla., died Aug. 21 when a roadside bomb exploded near his convoy outside Mosul. After earning his GED, Washalanta bounced from one odd job to another, including a stint with a circus. He then settled on becoming a Marine, a decision his family said Washalanta cherished. "He was so proud," said his mother, Carol Caldwell. "It was the first time I ever saw him proud of himself and proud of what he was doing. He went from a scared little boy to a very proud young man."

The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.

While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more

To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.

The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill

I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

With the passing of yet another Memorial Day weekend, I'm humbly reminded that our family is not the only Gold Star family in Oklahoma. I've set aside time today to reflect on the past and remember that your family has suffered the loss of their soldier. Thank you for this soldier's service and duty. As he will always be dearly missed because he payed the ultimate sacrifice. He gave his life to protect our country and our freedom.
Sister of Spc. Jeffrey S. Henthorn (Balad, Iraq Feb. 8, 2005)

God bless this special soldier and his grieving loved ones. Be by their side in their time of need.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Pfc Washalanta. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Pfc Washalanta knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Pfc Washalanta!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Nachez, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Chez,
We love you so much and are so proud that you knew Jesus. I remember the last time you visited us, you mentioned that you awoke every day with a prayer, then prayed several times a day. We will see you one day, Chez. Thanks for your help in keeping America strong. Love Zelma

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
