Robert Oliver Unruh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
There was precious little that Robert Oliver Unruh''s family could do to dissuade him from joining the military. His great-grandfathers served in World War II, a grandfather fought in Korea and his father saw action in Vietnam. "We talked a little about Vietnam and I told him war wasn''t pretty, but he still wanted to serve his country," said his father, Dennis Wahrer. Unruh, 25, of Tucson, Ariz., died Sept. 25 near Baghdad when his unit came under attack. He was stationed in South Korea. Unruh''s mother, Karen Unruh-Wahrer, collapsed at her home Oct. 2, hours after viewing her son''s body, and died later that night. A friend said that she had been unable to stop crying after her son''s death. Robert Unruh grew up in Virginia, where he graduated from high school in 1998. He joined the Army shortly after the first anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. He had been living not far from the Pentagon when the attack occurred and felt its impact deeply. He chose to be a combat engineer in tribute to one of his grandfathers, who also held the post.

My brother has always been my rock. We were best friends and knew we could count on each other. I love that Vincent Dailey and Lisa Dailey Johnson named their son after my brother. It´s hard not to be able to speak to him but I know he and my mom are with us always. I would love to meet his best friend and his family. This is my email address if anyone would like to reach out to me. God bless you

Whenever Robert would get a letter from his family he would always come down the hall to my room and show the pictures that they sent him especially of his niece. He loved his family always. I Vincent was his best friend when we served in Korea together.

It’s been 16 years and the pain is not any less. I love you Robbie and miss you so much. You would be proud of your niece. She has grown into such an amazing young woman. She has decided that she is going into the Marines. I know you will be watching over her.

i knew Rob very well. we were in basic together, then went to korea together, both of us ended up in the same company, B 44th eng BN. we were good friends. he used to come and wake me up during all hours of the night just to talk. he'd tell me how he missed his family. i know they were important to him. especially his neice, he was always talking about her. I got orders to redeploy to the states, and left Rob in korea. after a few months I heard my old company, my brothers were being deployed to iraq. not to long after that i was told that Rob was shot and killed. I remember how guilty I felt my freind was gone, and I wasnt there to get his back. Ill never forget Robert. he was an amazing human being. just knowing him made ypu want to be better. Im sorry I wasnt there for you brother.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Spc Unruh. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Spc Unruh.

In Memory of Robert ~ (Debra Estep)

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Robert, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend (KIA on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the family of Spc. Robert Unruh,

I have always wanted to write and extend to you my deepest sympathy for the loss of your loving son and

brother,Robert. My son, PFC Andrew

M. Ward, at the time, served in the same Unit-44th Br. Combat Team and both were stationed in Korea. My loving son, Andrew, died a couple of months later (December 5,2004) after Robert. I can now honestly say "I know how you are feeling". The endless tears, the

lingering feeling of longing to hear their voice and to see their faces once again. And as the year and months passes, it's not getting any easier. But, one thing I know for sure, is that they died a hero and unselfishly gave to us their ultimate sacrifice, defending the one thing we, as Americans, should always cherish and remember, freedom and

freedom for our future generation.

If our sons helped and saved a thousand, a hundred or even one man's life and to live freely in their country, isn't that worth fighting for? I candle glows everyday for our sons. WE SHALL NEVER FORGET!
