Anthony W. Monroe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
It was telling that Anthony W. Monroe''s boss was much more than a boss. She considered him a member of her own family. "I couldn''t have loved him more if he was my own son," said Judi Mackie, who runs the Pretzel Maker kiosk at Kirkwood Plaza in Bismarck, N.D. "He called me his second mom. Tony was a terrific kid" Monroe, 20, of Bismarck, died Oct. 11 when rockets hit his camp in Baghdad. He was based at Fort Hood. "Tony loved Bismarck and really, really loved North Dakota," said Mackie. "But he wanted to get out in the world, and this was a good chance for him to get his education." Monroe, who graduated high school in 2002, enjoyed photography and aspired to be a photojournalist. In his spare time, he was an avid billiards player and a talented bass guitarist. "If Tony could have arranged his own funeral, I know it would have been a lot different," said friend Ty Bohe. "He would have wanted us to be partying instead of sitting there crying and singing gospel songs and whatnot. He''d have rock ''n'' roll going." He is survived by his mother, Bernadette.

The moment you told me that you joined because you wanted to help and it was after the towers you became my hero...I miss you every day Monroe.

To whom it may read this, my deepest condolences to his family, it's been almost 20 years since his passing, and I was deployed to with him. He left a big marked on all of us who were there, his gentle and humbleness was incredible, he was learning and soaking up the culture and was very much loved in the place name FOB Falcon, in Iraq Baghdad. He was very loyal friend and someone who genuinely would stop and listen to you. He was funny and fun to be with all around, that you would instantly want to be around him. I miss my friend, and I hope you are looking from heaven because I miss you my friend

To the family of Pfc. Anthony W. Monroe:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

I know this is for the family...but I just want to post something to Monroe to help me clear my head. I served with him in Iraq and we were good friends. It's been almost 6 years...but it hurts now more than ever.

I don't know why your stuck in my head today Monroe...but I think about you quite often and I miss you very much. I remember the two of us driving to get coffee in the mornings before we would head to the motor pool to work. And to know that you were in the office with me just minutes before we got hit...and to know that you died just 20 ft from where i was at and i didn't even know that you were on the other side of the wall...it's so overwhelming, i feel so guilty...i'm so sorry...i'm sorry i didn't know...i'm sorry i wasn't there...i'm sorry that this happened to you. You'll always be in my heart and I love you very much! You were a great soldier but you were an amazing person...and I will never forget how you touched my life!

To the family of Pfc. Anthony W. Monroe:
I was looking at a website called "Faces of the Fallen", and for whatever reason, clicked on Pfc. Monroe's picture. Though I never knew him, the story jumped out at me. His name was Tony Monroe and my name is Torrey Monroe. He was stationed at Ft. Jackson in Columbia, SC, and I live in Charleston, SC. He played guitar and was into photography, and I am a guitarist and photographer.
I just wanted to say thank you to the Monroe family and to Tony for the ultimate sacrifice that you have all given so that I have the freedoms that I enjoy today, and I wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss.

To the PFC Monroe & Family,
I had the honor to serve with him in Iraq. I remember me and him got to ft hood on the same day and were room mates at the replacement co. Me and him went to divarty at the same time. When he got there he got the nick name "FNG". Every day since the day he was taken from us i cant help but think i was somehow responsible for it. I was the uint armorer. i broke my toe being in a careless rush to get ammo for a mission we had a few days prior. Since i broke my toe i was unable to go out on the mission so he had to fill in for me. i saw him the night before he was playing the guitar and i told him he was gonna fill in for me. he said ok and i told him " ill see u later'. i remember the morning it happened i heard a loud BOOM. It was beging to be a common thing so me and my room mate CALI didnt think much of it. i rememebre us asking each other " are u alive'' we both said we were ok and went beck to bed until a few min later we were told to evac becasue the generator was on fire. we did and then when everyone was outside rumors that monroe was hburt started circulating. ill never forget that moring, i remeber Guerra holding his flak vest in tears. everyday since ive been back i can not get that image out of my mind. i am so sorry to the family for their loss and i am so sorry that it was him and not e. I hope that the family can please forgive me.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend (KIA on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Just wanted to take the time to remeber Monroe. We served in Iraq together. I didn't get the chance to know that much about Monroe but the memories I have of him are heartfelt. I rember asking Monroe about the tattoos he had on his wrist from going on convoys with him througout Baghdad. I always knew him to be a harder worker and someone who never complained. I miss you and Pam so much but I have to know you are in a better place God bless.

Bernie and family- i have only meet you a few times from the pretzelmaker. i worked there with tony. we also played pool together at shooters and hung out other places too. we talked alot about him going to the army and what a difference he would make. once he went to basic and graduated we talked about how much a reality this was. we had his goodbye super with judi at the steak house where we really talked some more. he was such a kind man and he was always willing to help someone out. i wish we could still talk some more tony, i miss you so much. your friends from work and shooters can say the same. i am so sorry this happend. you know he is looking down on us and he is still there for all of us. he did make a difference. i love you so much tony! my deepest sympathy bernie and may god bless your family.

Tony,

You were the best. My sister and Britni loved you so. We miss seeing you at the prezel maker in the Bismarck Kirkwood Mall. You were a great guy and a great friend. All of us back in Linton/Strasburg miss so much. When I saw your picture again, I had to cry. I miss you and I know we'll meet again someday. I respect your courage and strength, and for you, I will someday serve my country.

To the family of Pfc. Anthony W. Monroe:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 28 May, 2006. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Leila Campbell

Bernadette,

You've never met me, but I was a good friend and classmate of Tony's at BHS. I always loved to see him anytime I could, and always got the best hugs from him. I never stopped praying for God to take care of him when he went away with the military, just as I did with all of my friends who were in the military. And now, he's in the presence of God and other friends and family members. I know he always loved German food, so here's something to cheer you up: My grandmother(God rest her soul) died in January, '04. She was ALWAYS cooking German food while she was with us, and I'm sure that now that she's up in Heaven, she's back at it again, and Tony and God are sitting back in white recliners saying, "Ah, this is Heaven," while eating as much German food as they can possibly handle. Please hang in there, and let me know if there's anything I can do. Josh Raywalt knows how to get ahold of me, if you need to. I'm always here to help.

Lots of Love,

I was very sorry to hear about Tony's death. I knew his dad, Jeff and his aunt, Michelle, in grade school at Roosevelt Elementary in Bismarck, ND. Michelle was a classmate of mine.
