Raymond L. White Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Raymond L. White''s last moments illustrated the way he lived. When White''s convoy was ambushed Nov. 12 by a group of insurgents, he held them off with gunfire until other convoy vehicles arrived. Instead of ducking down into his Humvee, his fire helped others get to safety. "He fought to the bitter end," said his mother Sharon White. "Only five people in the entire convoy were hurt. Had he not been so brave, everyone in that convoy would have died." White, 22, of Elwood, Ind., died during the ambush. He was based at Fort Hood, Texas. White graduated from high school in 2001 and studied two years at the New Mexico Military Institute. He left before graduating to enlist in the Army. "He always put others first," said his father, Henry White. That was as true for his friends as it was in his unit. Don Cox, a neighbor, recalled several years ago when calves escaped from a nearby farm and rambled along a highway. Two were injured in accidents with vehicles, but White led the third calf home _ running a mile through soft snow. "He grew up to be a very fine young man," Cox said.

I can't believe it has been almost 5 years since Joel called home in a broken spirit to tell us Ray had been killed and would I call his mom to tell her that he was sorry but the Army would not let him bring Ray home. Ray's mom was so comforting and generous in her offer to welcome these soldiers home upon their homecoming. I think Ray would be very proud of the soldier that Joel has become. Ray you are missed very much by everyone that knew you. Thanks for your service and for watching over your Army buddies.

Ray,
I miss you nephew.
I cry sometimes when
I see your face,
But I know I will
see you again,
In a new place.
Until we meet again
Ray.
God bless you and keep you,
In his mighty hands.
Through my tears,
This is all I can say.
I love you nephew.

In Memory of Raymond ~ (Debra Estep)

November 20, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Raymond, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

I am Deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Spc. Raymond L. White, two years ago today.
The price this young hero and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
May Raymond rest safely in the Loving Care of God and may the Peace of the Lord continue to be with the White family.
There will never be enough ways to humbly thank these heroes for their Supreme Sacrifice, my brother among them. KIA~Vietnam, 1967.

May you find Strength in your Faith,
Comfort in God's Love, and
Peace in knowing this country remembers Raymond's Sacrifice.

I served with Ray in the same platoon in Iraq, and I was on the patrol where Ray lost his life. I fully believe that his actions saved our lives. I considered Ray to be one of my closest friends in Iraq, and his loss has been hard. I could spend all day talking about this, but I just want to say I miss him, and I think about him and the others in my company that gave everything in Iraq. I love you Ray, and God grant that we meet again.

Ray was a friend of mine whom i went to school with. A week after his funeral I was called up to head in to Iraq. I wasnt scared because I Knew that Ray was watching over me. I never made it to Iraq that year for medical reasons. But now I am headed in as a civilin contracter in his honor and all of the other soldiers who fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. As a contracter I will be saving lives in a top seret project. So even though I was medically unqualified to serve. I took it upon myself to honor our fallen heros. Thank You Ray You are missed very much.I know that you are looking down upon us from heaven and taking care of us while we are in combat. That is the man that you always were. I just wanted to say thanks and that I will never forget about you. your battle johnny
