Robert W. Sweeney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks, Robert Sweeney III told a local newspaper that folks had the wrong idea about people his age. "People like to say our generation are slackers that don't care much about anything. But they'll see that's wrong," he said. "If they call me up, I'm ready. Those (Sept. 11 victims) didn't sign any papers to die for their country. But I did." Sweeney, 22, of Pineville, La., was killed Jan. 10 when an explosive hit his vehicle in Baghdad. He was based in Lake Charles, La. Sweeney was a member of the JROTC in high school and attended Louisiana College, majoring in criminal justice. He was a sophomore, having missed some semesters because of National Guard duties. His death was among a string of casualties from Louisiana's guard. Just days before his death, Sweeney's father had ordered his passport, just in case his son was injured and taken to a hospital in Germany. "My son was one of our brave soldiers who gave his life so others could live in a democracy," Robert Sweeney II said.

15 years and 3 days. I miss you so much Rob. You were so much to so many. I wish you could meet my son. You both share such strong similarities, both temperamental and sensitive. I just wonder what it would be like today, if you hadn't died.

As I sat here this afternoon looking out across the water on Three Mile Lake and remembering my nephew Rob and his father Robert W. Sweeney II (my brother), I realized that many of you who knew SSGT Robert W. Sweeney III may not be aware that they are together again. Robby as our family knew him died on April 23 , 2018. He was just three days shy of being 66. While he had been ill for many years after Robs death, this was caused by a sudden heart attack. We had left just hours before he had been fishing off the dock that evening. The nieghbors said he had waved when they passed. While I am so happy that he is united, not only with Rob, but also with his best friend and Robs mother, Pat. I miss him so much. We have lived with and/or beside each other for ten years now. I have many family members in my Heavenly photo frame and have expanded it to include him. I know he is so happy to be with them and well. Thank you all for your many thoughts, prayers and remembrances of Rob that meant so much to his father.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Sweeney Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in Afghanistan. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

January 11, 2009

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Robert, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

My heart is filled with deep sorrow as I look at the picture of your son, Staff Sgt. Robert W. Sweeney. So young and handsome and Proud.

My son is in Iraq now and my sanity hangs by a thread each time I hear of recent casualties. I plead with God each day to allow not only him, but every son, daughter, husband & wife, to come home safe and sound. But I also know that if this was not to be in my case, I hold fast to the resurrection hope found at John 5:28&29.

May this hope also be a comfort to you, to know that one day soon, you'll be able to embrace your son once again.

I am so sorry for your lost. I lost my brother SSG Edward Karoalsz on November 19, 2005, in Bigji, Iraq. Still the pain doesn't go away and I don't think it will ever. Just keep reminding yourself that he is in a better place. He is a true American HERO, just like my brother and everyone else serving this country. May god bless you and help you get throught the tought times when they come.

Please know that I am deeply sorry for the recent loss of Staff Sgt. Robert W. Sweeney.
As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly,
and as a sister, who has lost a brother to war,
I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing.
The overwhelming heartache, seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes.
Please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.
~Ever so softly and slowly, time does heal.~

May Robert Rest Safely, in the Loving Care of God and know that he is a True American Hero and he WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
I pray that God's Comfort and Grace will continue to be with the Sweeney family.
I am the sister, of such a Young Hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.

May the Peace of God
and the memories of Robert,
remain in your heart always
and give you strength through
these difficult days.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

Dear Mr. Sweeney,

We are all saddened and shocked by the news of Robert's passing. I knew Robert as a soldier in our unit. He was a professional soldier, a friend to everyone and he is a fine young man. I say "is", because I know that he is not really gone but just in a better place with Jesus and I will see him again.

I pray that God might take away the anguish that you must be feeling with this great loss.

Know that in our hearts, Robert will always be a Hero first and a Brother forever.

May God bless and keep you, our thoughts and prayers are with you always.

Sincerely,
