Marty G. Mortenson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 23, 2005.
The last time he was home, Marty Mortenson bought his nephews toys to make up for birthdays he'd missed. He volunteered to shovel snow off neighbors' driveways. He went to a women's prayer group to thank them for praying to keep him safe. And he did all of it in a T-shirt, to feel the winter cold that he missed in the desert. Mortenson, 22, of Flagstaff, Ariz., was killed April 20 by an explosive device in Ramadi. He was based at Camp Pendleton. Mortenson grew up wanting to join the Marines, talking about it with high school friends and saying he was prepared to give his life for his country. He worked as a lifeguard in high school and joined the Marines in May 2002, about a year after graduating. He was on his third tour in Iraq, and family members said he was ready to come home. "During his time in the military, he began to change and the rough, tough stuff became less important," said his mother, Ruth. He planned a hike the Grand Canyon with his mom when he got back, and talked about joining a SWAT team, switching to the National Guard, or going to college. He is also survived by his father, Ken.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this month and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Marty G. Mortenson US Marine Lance Corporal.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Marty, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

Sincerely,

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Today I went to visit my brother who is also a marine. He is buried at the same cemetery as Marty. His name is SSgt. Jason D. Whitehouse. He was killed Nov. 2006 in Iraq. As I was leaving the cemetery I noticed a marine flag on a plot and stopped to read the name and realized that a young marine was resting their. I came home and looked up Marty's name on legacy. Marty sounds like a wonderful person. I appreciate his sacrifice very much. Next time I visit my brother I will stop by Marty's site and say a hello and a thank you.

Thank you, Marty, and your family, for the sacrifice you have made for me. I was a teacher for forty years, and I grew accustomed to protecting the young ones. Now, I'm growing older, and those same young ones are now protecting me. I'm able to live in freedom in a blessed nation today, because of your sacrifice. I will look forward to saying a face-to-face "Thank you" to you when I see you in Heaven. For now, I'll write this note, and also I'll thank your family. My love. Sylvia

i just wanted to say the marty's service today(wed. 27) was nice and i think it was what he would have wanted it to be. his best friend spoke first about protecting your family and country and that he died doing what was god's will of him. his aquaintence sgt mj witt of the us marine reserve spoke next and told of how marty was his hero. i had the pleasure of being present at the particular conversation he was speaking of. then a letter from his maternal grandfather was read, and a next door neighbor teenager spoke of how marty got him out of a bad crowd. romans 11.6 and so on was recited by request of the family. the interment was to usual military standards, with the colors flying and the flags at half mass. they presented the flag to his father and mother, and gave the twenty-one gun salute while the trumpet played.
