Matthew S. Apuan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 15, 2007.
Ernesto Rodriguez remembered Matthew S. Apuan as a fun-loving prankster and avid skateboarder who could always cheer up his comrades. "He always, always put everybody in a good mood," Rodriguez said. "It's just hard to put it into words. He was a bright person, brought you up when you were down. He was always there." Apuan, 27, of Las Cruces, N.M., was killed Feb. 18 by small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was a 1998 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Hood. As a freshman, Apuan was a member of the Air Force Junior ROTC program; as a senior, he was on the track team. Apuan also played soccer in the High Noon Soccer League. He attended New Mexico State University for two years and studied hotel-motel management. On his first deployment to Iraq in 2004, Matthew was awarded an Army Commendation Medal for his role in the battle of Najaf. He also was involved in the battle of Fallujah. On his return, he proposed to his girlfriend, Nicole, purchased a new sports car, learned about wine and put Vietnamese hot chili sauce on his favorite foods. Apuan also is survived by his father and stepmother, Charles and Martha Apuan; and his mother, Sandra Apuan.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Matthew S. Apuan US Army Sergeant.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

Dear friends and family of Matthew: I would like to thank each of you. Your memories of Matty and your condolences to us, his mom, dad, and sister have given us an overwhelming sense of your love for him. I pray you all know just how much your thoughts and prayers have given us strength. You are correct in saying that Matty will be sorely missed. He was a wonderful son and brother. He loved all of so much and we will miss his smiling face, his sensitivity, and wit. Matty was a one of kind. He was generous to a fault, and caring. I remember Matty best this way. One of the memories I have of Matty are the times before he went into the army and when he was home on leave when he would come to my school where I taught children that were severely impaired. His heart was always open to them, and they adored him because he shared his wonderful sense of humor and fun with them. It was always a joy to have him there and see him work and play with them. This is just one of many ways I will remember my son. All and all, I give you, everyone my heartfelt thanks for being here for us and a part of Matty's life. With that said, Peace in Christ. Sincerely, Matty's Mom, Sandy.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Sgt. Apuan has shown a courage that goes beyond that of any normal man. He stands as a hero in the finest traditions of the United States Army. With each loss we feel such a mix of pain and pride. On January 22, 2007 we lost our son-in-law in Iraq. Spec. Nicholas Brown was in 2/7 Cav and loved being a soldier. He left behind a young wife and a newborn son. As with all of these young heroes they were volunteers, they went into the Army because they wanted to. They are the key to our freedom, we live safe over here because of them. Please accept our prayers and sympathy during this hard time.

For each soldier that has fallen so that many may stand
We honor their spirit as they pass to God’s hand

For without their sacrifice we would live forever in fear
We pray for their loved ones and provide a salute and a tear

God help us heal the wounds of hate and the misery of war
That is our gift to our fallen heroes that are amongst us no more.

We, the family of Matthew, wish to thank all of you for sharing with us the bittersweet experience of mourning his loss, while celebrating his life and service.

The simple phrase, "I am sorry for your loss" is an expression that conveys a wealth of emotion and care.

It is our sincere hope that a simple "Thank you" will do the same.

Thank you and bless you all for caring. It helps.

As a former Las Cruces citizen and retired military member, I too am grieved at the loss of another American Hero. Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of your son. I live in Idaho now but keep in touch via the on-line Sun News with what is happening in Las Cruces. It may not make any sense, but Matthew did it right. It's OK to grieve but you can hold your head up high for his sake. We also lost a member of our church Feb 8, 2007 in Iraq; Sgt Jim Holtom. I shall never take for granted what their sacrifices have done for me and my family. Seeing Old Glory fluttering in the breeze has a whole new meaning now. Those red stripes stand for the blood shed by our nations great men and women who willing go and give so others may stay free. May God bless the Apuan family and thank you for raising a man willing to unselfishly give it all for me and my country.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

My husband served with Matthew through his first and second tour. While I never had the opportunity to get to know him, I know that James thought very highly of him. His loss was and will be felt for quite awhile. He was a good man and will be remembered for that. His brothers-in-arms will always hold a special place in their hearts for him as will the families that support Delta Company.

Sgt Apuan was in the same platoon, 3rd platoon, as my husband, SGT Chris Kiernan. Chris was very fond of SGT Apaun. His brothers in arms miss him and their hearts are heavy.
You're home now brave soldier. God bless Matthew Apuan.

I had the priviledge to meet Matt because I work with his father Charles(chuck) and my heart goes out to the Apuan family, I know how much Chuck loved his son and how very proud he was and still is of his only son. I will keep his family in my prayers as they go through this tough time.

I am a freelance writer who happened to be at the Las Cruces airport this morning when Sgt Apuan arrived there. It is difficult for me to express the mix of emotions that I felt as I watched the plane land and then to see his casket removed. It was also sad to see that the Patriot Guard Riders were present. I am glad they were, but they should not have to be.

I felt grief-even though none of us are acquainted- and anger-which I cannot define the source of at this time. Probably because people can't seem to live in a world without violence.

Many blessings to Sgt. Apuan and his family and friends.

My prayers are with you, Apuan family. May you find God of Peace and God of Comfort in all you do through this process. And know your friends are with you, always.
