I was William's Platoon leader at Ft Bliss for a year and then in Iraq for a couple months. William was one of my best Soldiers and leaders. He always gave 110% and I could always count on him. He left us way too early! He is gone but has never been forgotten.

Billy was my friend. We served in Afghanistan together, hung out and drank a few beers together. He was a good man always there for a fellow soldier or friend always polite and quick with a joke, even broke out a jaw harp every once in awhile, I miss him, he truly was one of a kind. He will always be in my thoughts.

It's been 11 years that you have been gone. Some days are harder than others. As I look back over every message that has been written on here it gives me peace. Those that knew you knew what a wonderful person you were! I feel like you changed people's lives through your kindness. I love you baby boy. Till we meet again.

Please know that just as your loved one remains in your hearts and minds; his sacrifice, and that of your family, remains with the people he died defending. October 6, 2009
Hello, my name is gary and i am from massachussettes. As Americans i feel it is safe to say, we all hurt when we hear of another fallen soldier. Not as you are hurting but still the pain of the loss hits us all. I have not lost anyone i know to the war in Iraq. However i have met a few who have served and returned safley. After meeting these people i was left with the knowledge and understanding of how much honor and pride they had in serving there country.
The reason I came to write you was, i watched a local news program doing a story on a wwII Vetran in New Hampshire. The Vetran was turning 90. The news report went on to tell his story from WWII and how when his air unit was flying over germany they were shot down. He lost many of his fellow airman and was in a pow camp for 14 months. His birthday wish was too fly one more time in a bomber, to finish his mission. He was able to do that. At the end of the report the reporter shook his hand and thanked him for saving the country. Just like your son. Sometimes when i have been living my life, i often felt like i was not doing my part for my country, when young men and women where making the ultimat sacrafice for me, and my country. Then after thinking about it, i realized we all have a purpose on this planet. Different jobs to do, lives to touch. I have a nephew i raise, who because i turned my whole world up side down for, will hopefully touch and change someone elses life. Just like your sons life touched mine, and made me think more about how i can help people and the world around me.
It is fall now here in New England. This weekend as i am climbing the hills of New Hampshire with my goddaughter, I will think of William and his sacrafice for our nation. Thanking him for the opprotunity to hold my goddaughters hand and feel the love.

A Soldier had die out on the
battlefield;
Broken hearts are weeping For
Them,
But take comfort of knowing
that God had sent Them a
rainbow from heaven;
The Souls of the Soldiers
have gone to there home
in heaven,
Our Loved One's has follow
God's lovely rainbow in the
sky;
All the way to the end of the
sky.
That leads all the way to the
other end of the Lord's
house in heaven,
So just keep on praying and
trust that God will send us
that same rainbow in the sky;
Where Our Loved One's are
waiting For You and For Me at

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Bushnell, Billy was a good soldier and a great man. We met when I first arrived in El Paso for my first duty assignment. I was a brand new private and he was already a seasoned veteran. His guidence and leadership got alot of us soldiers ready for the hardships we faced together. I was with your son in his final moments, and it still hurts deeply to this day. The only thing that helps me live with his death, is thinkinking about his life. I will never forget your son. Please remember that you do not bear this loss alone, Your son, our brother, my brother.

It has been almost one year since I first wrote to you. I want you to know that my son still feels the loss of Billy, having served with him in Iraq, with the 2/12. He sent pictures of the memorial they set up at Ft. Bliss, that includes your son's name on it. It is a very nice memorial and I'm glad his name will live on. I also want you to know my son and I think of him every day because we each wear bracelets with his name on it in remembrance. A few of his comrades wear this bracelet in honor of him and my son asked me to also wear it. I will continue to wear it, with honor, until he asks me not to. Trust that he will never be forgotten by his fellow soldiers.

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

Sgt. Billy Bushnell was with my son in Iraq. My son Patrick handed me the phone today, and I talked with Mr. and Mrs. Bushnell as they welcomed the 2/12 Cavalry, 4/1 Cavalry home to El Paso, Texas. NO problems do I have that compare to the lose of an only son, and here they are celebrating the return of my son home.
Thank you. As you return home, I just want you to know that the gain that I feel in my heart is the strength of this nation, because of people like you.
I am deeply moved and proud of you both.

To all the Bushnell Family,
I will never forget the beautiful smile that I so often saw on Billy's face. He was such a polite person and friendly to everyone. He was so lucky to have grown up in such a family as yours, and you as you know were lucky to have got to have him in your family. Someday, when we're all in Heaven, we'll get to see that beautiful smile again, and I will be smiling as I see you all reunited. It will be a happy day!

We are so sorry for your loss. Billy stands as a hero in the finest traditions of the United States Army. On January 22, 2007 we lost our son-in-law in Iraq. Spec. Nicholas Brown was in 2/7 Cav and loved being a soldier. He left behind a young wife and a newborn son. Colonel William Orlando Darby of Ranger fame said that Rangers were too valuable to be lost. All American soldiers fit this pattern and it is tragic to lose one. Please accept our prayers and sympathy during this hard time. Thank you,

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Please accept my deepest sympathies. My son serves with the 2-12 Cavalry Division in Iraq and is a friend of your son. He has your son's picture on his myspace page with a beautiful tribute. We just spoke yesterday and he told me how losing "Bushnell" has been one of the worse days of his life. He considers Billy as one of his heroes, friend, brothers-in-arms. Please know that my son misses him still. Here is a part of what he says on his webpage about your son, "He will always be an awesome guy, a great soldier but most of all, my friend. He will always be remembered in my heart and be forever missed." As a mother, my prayers have gone out to you that you remember the wonderful moments with your son and may they overshadow the sadness of that day. The last time I saw him, he was probably in grade school. When I recieved word of his fate, I found it hard to believe he was even old enough to be in the armed services. I have fond memories of going to the same college with his father and several members of my family were at his parents home when they heard the news. May God be with his family and all the other brave soldiers he fought with to keep our country the best country to live in in the world.

My husband and "Bushnell" or "Bushy," as my husband used to call him, were roommates for some time while they were both stationed in Hawaii. My husband and I were very lucky to able to spend time with such a thoughtful, intelligent, and wonderful person. Billy was a great person to talk to and a lot of fun to hang out with. Billy was always talking about his family and you could just tell by the way he talked of all of you and the look he had on his face when he spoke of you all that he loved you very much. Billy's loss comes to us as a shock and we will miss him dearly. Our hearts are saddened, but our love and prayers go out to Billy and his family.

I have some idea of the pain they are enduring because I also lost my son in Iraq. I say a heart felt thank you to the Bushnell family for the life of their only son. America owes a special gratitude to a family such as this who raise their son to be a hero and defend all our freedoms. The vast majority of Americans will never, ever forget Sgt. “Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

I worked with William at Alpha Company, 2-35 Infantry (3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii). I worked with him from September 2005 until he reported to Ft. Bliss from Hawaii. William was one of the most easy going people I had ever met and he was a dedicated soldier. He was a patient teacher when teaching me about working in the training room. William was witty and funny. I am honored to have known and worked with William. William was a friendly, witty, easy going individual who will be missed by all who knew him. I cannot accurately express my sadness to his family for their loss. His death is a shock to me. I know that our loss is Heaven's gain and that one day we'll see William again.

William, Thank you so much for your sacrifice. I did not get a chance to meet you but my friend said that you worked with her at Bob's in Jasper and she knew you as "Billy". You were an amazing person. You are the first soldier with Jasper ties to die in this war, a small town in Newton County, of which I lived at many years. I am proud to have shared this earth witha person like you. Hooah! Job well done Soldier!
GOD BLESS YOU!

We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your young Warrior. The Military and families all over the USA and world are grieving with you and praying for you. What a very brave individual you have in your family that would give up a life for their homeland and its people so they can remain free. Your Freedom Fighter has served the Country above and beyond the call of duty, let no one ever tell you different. With the mission now completed your Warrior has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. The Father above has William in his arms and will give him peace as well as eventually easing your pain and suffering. God speed to you and SGT William W. Bushnell, our HERO. We are so proud of them that are willing to sacrifice for this great Nation, THANK YOU.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
