Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Robert A. Surber US Army Sergeant. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

Dear Family of Sgt. Surber, You do not know me...nor did Robert but my mother Glyn Asher Surber passed away June 30, 2008 in Knoxville and I was looking through other Surbers' who had passed and as I was signing out this popped up and I read through a few. My thought was that I feel very proud to be a Surber and to know that this young man died for our freedom. I will remember you in my prayers and I only wish I had known him. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Robert, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To Robert's Family:
My mother was a Surber. I am researching my family tree tonight and came across this book. I stopped my family tree research and began researching Robert. I have discovered that he was one of our finest and was a hero. I am proud that he carried the last name Surber. I'm sure we are related somehow and wish I had had the opportunity to meet him. I appreciate his passion for freedom and serving all of us. God bless his family and his friends. May his sacrifice be held in high esteem by all Americans.

Dear Family & Friends of Sgt. Robert Surber,
On Saturday my husband and I read in the paper of your soldier coming home and went to honor him as the processional went by. But we had missed him and were saddened, for to pay our respects to you would have been an honor for us.
Today, my friend asked me to meet her for lunch in Inverness and I was stopped by a police officer at a light in order to wait for your son and your family to go by. As I cried with you, I laid my hand across my heart and I asked Jesus to touch you and to let you feel his presence for the comfort that he gives.
Then I said to your son, Sir, I thank you for being one of the ones who has allowed my children and grandchildren to lay their heads down at night without the fears so many others across the seas have to live with everyday.
The sacrifice you and your son have made is huge, unimaginable for us to comprehend, and my family and I are forever grateful to you and the other families who have lost loved ones in order to protect our freedoms.
We pray for God to comfort you, we pray for time to allow you to recall more and more precious memories and for you to know we feel your son is our hero forever and ever.
God Bless You.

I have known the Surber family for more than 20 years, practically one of the family. My love was for his aunt, who also went to her demise prematurely. Perhaps she is waiting with open arms to receive him.
This family has given much to the protection of this country. Herbert his uncle, another hero during Viet Nam and others who have stood tall when their duty called. My heart and prayers are with them during this crushing realization he won't be smiling to their face, but gone he is not, just waiting on the sideline.
To Allen and Carrie, Ollie, sisters, aunts, uncles and all of the family, my deepest sympathies. God will see you through.
"Home At Last"
Alas we watch our comrade approach
Knowing well the expense war has encroached.
The vibrant flag hugging the horse drawn coffin
Are we listening or just standing gawking
With clopping hoof on the road to rest
We are watching one of the best
Why is it Lord we must endure the pain
You know it's a world insane
But here is heroism in all it's glory
Stand up drink in the taste of gory
This man stood for our greatest freedoms
Do not forget we must rid the demons
Alas oh lord, please cease this Malay
ease the pain and suffering of this day.
Now he rests no more combat
There is no shame only conquest.
God bless you all.

I thought I saw his face today, in the sparkle of the sun.
And then I heard the angels say,"His work on earth is done".
I thought I heard his voice today, then laugh his hearty laugh.
And then I heard the angels say, "There's peace dear one at last".
I thought I felt his touch today, in the breeze that rustled by.
And then I heard the angels say, "His spirit never dies".
I thought I saw my broken heart, in the cresent of the moon.
And then I heard the angels say, "The Lord is coming soon".
I thought that you had left me, for the stars so far above.
And then I heard the angels say, "He left you with his love".
I thought that I would miss you so, and never find my way.
And then I heard the angels say, "He is with you everyday".
The families of the military personnel make a great sacrifice as well. They give up the time with their loved one in order for them to protect our country. So I'm saying thank you to the family for their sacrifice along with his. God bless you.

Battle...Its been tough. But I wanted to thank you for looking out for me and being apart of my life and hope you knew that I had your back too Roomie.
I still remember helping you move out of your old Apt and it was the last boxes you had. It was late and driving back to the new Apt. I told you that It would look funny if we were pulled over because in the front of the cab was two baseball bats, two of your swords, and some rope and all we needed was skii mask.
I had some good times with you. Every Sunday at Hooters and Snowboarding at Crystal Mnt. You caught on to it quick. No leasson at all.
Everything was Florida to you. A Dolphin fan, FSU and of course Florida OJ no pulp. My fav band, you use to tell me, you know there are from Florida right.
I didn't know how you did it but you use to stay up late at nite playing WOW and only going on two hours of sleep. but always made it to work. I think you were running on Sugar; Dr Pepper and candy.
Buddy I am going to miss you. And it hurts bro. But I am so glad to know you and have you as a Roomie.
Rest in peace Sgt Surber

Subrer,
I don't know were to start I miss you with all of my heart. I think about the long nights we had in Iraq staying up all night to listing to music. Or the time me you and pat made potato guns and shot them off your deck. all the bands we would go to see in Seattle or the time you came to Utah to with pat on your trip home. All you did was tell me how stupid Utah was and that I needed to move to FL. when you got out. Rob I have had allot of friends in my life but your are not a friend, I really thought of you as family..... I'm so lost right now I feel I let you down buy leaving the army the day I left your house in Puyallup to go drive home I had to fight back the tiers because I have never had anyone in my life that I could count on like I did you. And don't you worry rob I will be driving the go carts for you buddy...
To Surbers family,
I am so sorry for your loss I know what a grate person rob was I served with him on his first tour in Iraq and there is no way I would have made it with out him. I know that there is nothing I can say to take the hurt away but I loved your son as well as many, many other people did as well our thoughts and prays are with you in your time of morning and I just want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to meet some one a wonderful and as caring as ROB.
With love, Jason

He is Only Away~
In your thoughts and your heart you are always together, never apart; In your sorrow, remember~ he's only away... though he may not be with you, the memories stay... and in time, when the hurt isn't too much to bear, whenever you look in your heart; he'll be there.
I can only hope and pray for the family of young man at this time. His call to duty in protecting our country is most admirable! Some gave, some gave all. "The Lord is nearest those with a broken heart".
