Thomas R. Leemhuis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 22, 2007.
Thomas R. Leemhuis''s mother, Patty Leemhuis, said he was a fun-loving young man who enjoyed cracking jokes and playing video games. "His No. 1 football team was the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and he loved to wear his Nebraska hat around the University of Oklahoma," she said. "He loved to push it to the limit." Leemhuis, 23, of Binger, Okla., was killed June 21 by an explosive in Baghdad. He was assigned to Schweinfurt, Germany. His mother said Leemhuis had dreams of becoming a cop. She said at first he had thought of becoming a teacher and basketball coach, but then turned his thoughts to becoming a police officer "because he hated drugs." The last contact she had with him was through an e-mail June 18, she said. "He wrote that he loved me, and that he would be home soon. He also told me to stay strong," she said. She said her son was inspired to join the Army in 2005 after the death of his uncle, Melvin Jody Stevens, a Vietnam veteran. Her son also is survived by his father, Paul Whitehorn. "He will always be remembered and loved," said Tom Worcester, a relative.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Leemhuis Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Thomas R. Leemhuis US Army Private 1st Class. The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.

While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more

To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.

The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill

I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

Thomas I had the privelage of only meeting you a few times about 10 or 11 years ago when I was dating Aaron Loftis. I just wanted to say that I salute you for becoming a soldier & fighting for our country. You were a dear friend to my niece's husband Robert Codopony. I know you are truly loved & missed by all who knew you. I know we didn't really know each other but I'm proud to say that I at least had the chance to meet a man who would one day be a hero!!

Patty,
Today should not be the only day that we celebrate the veterans, it should be everyday. I know that you miss Thomas so much and I wish I could ease your pain, but there is no way that can happen. But it should be a comfort to you to know he was a hero even for just joining the service. Not all people have the courage to join and try to make a better world for their fellow americans. But he did and I am truly greatful, Thank you Patty for having such a wonderful son like Thomas.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dear family of our young warrior,
I have been hoping to think of something to say to honor his memory. It has been difficult. I speak to Patty occaisionally and she actually gives me strength with her kind words of encouragement. Yesterday I met the mother, father, son and daughter of Lori Ann Piestewa. As I spoke to her Dad some words came to me and I would like to repeat them here.

"I still remember and value the sacrifice your family has made for our country."

As this day comes. Please know that I and many other people still have this thought.

The strength you have is an inspiration to others. I am so impressed with the good works you have done to honor our young warriors memory.

Thank you.

I know this first year was very hard for you all. And I can't say that it will get any better. But Thank you for having a son like Thomas, who was brave enough to go out and fight for his country. Even though he is gone he is still looking out for you, he is making sure that he stays in your hearts and minds. Which I know won't be hard. As I read all the words of praise for our Hero, I know he will never be forgotten. And I'd like to Thank you and all the soldiers for all they do for us. He made us proud and Patty he knows how hurt you are. But I know he would like you to still enjoy life as if he was still here in person. Again Thank you for a person like your son Thomas. I know I'm thankful for him.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To the family of Thomas Leemhuis. My name is Bo Maggard,I now live in Phoenix Arizona but I call Binger and Anadarko home. I remember the family, back when I worked at Walmart. My daughter is a 1st cousin of Todd Burkhead, who I think graduated the same year from Binger. Thomas will always be considered a hero in Binger. Hopefully a statue or monument can someday be erected to honor
Thomas and other Binger soldiers. I very much appreciate the tremendous ultimate sacrifice that Thomas made for all of us, and all of our children and grandchildren and the family members to come. I consider an honor to have known of this young man and his family. All of us have the chance to someday see Thomas again, in heaven, and then we can shake his hand personally and thank him. In the meantime, we can only thank his family and friends. He is a hero.

Dear Family of PFC Thomas R. Leemhuis,

My heart goes out to you. I have thought of your family since I first heard of this action from folks back home. Im very proud of Thomas for serving our country. I'm also very proud of you for supporting him. I'm very proud of our tribe for remembering him. It seems that every person I have talked to has mentioned him and his grandmother in conversation. God bless you all and may you be given strength to celebrate Thomas brave life. At some point he ran and played at the Binger Y. I hope that we continue to have young Caddo people as brave and as strong as Thomas. I will think of him and I will not forget that he gave his life for our country. Hoe-wee.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
