I am here in Balad, Iraq reflecting during Memorial Day thinking about my friend Darrell. We were stationed together in Korea. No greater man is he who would lay down his life for a friend. I honor Darrell on today, this is the day that the Lord has made and we are to be rejoice and be glad in it. Its my prayer that the family will find comfort in knowing that we all pay tribute to Darrell today. You will be in my prayers.

My last entry was a year ago and I find myself in the same position, here at work celebrating the lives of all soldiers. Darrell and Elizabeth, you and your families are still in my mind and in my heart. Thank you for your sacrifices. I found a picture of Darrell's senior year in high school and it is hard to believe that his body is no longer with us, but knowing his spirit lives on keeps me going. Elizabeth, you are in my heart and in my prayers.

Love Lives On
Those we love remain with us
for love itself lives on,
and cherished memories never fade
because a loved one's gone.
Those we love can never be
more than a thought apart,
far as long as there is memory,
they'll live on in the heart.

Gone but never forgotten. Remembering you on the second anniversary of your death. Its still so surreal. I get weepy just thinking about you no longer being here on this earth. Here I am sitting at work on Memorial Day weekend. I sit here and think about how most of the country celebrates a three-day weekend while I sit here and celebrate you and others like you. I remember sitting with you at lunch in WA state and you asked me if I was happy. I am happy. I have a wonderful family and a son who is just a little younger than yours. I wish you could have experienced seeing your son grow up. You deserved so much more, Darrell. I am so glad that you found love and happiness in Elizabeth. There is a line in a Les Miserables song, "to love another person is to see the face of God". Well, you have experienced both now. You are greatly missed and will forever be in my thoughts. Elizabeth, you are always in my thoughts. Take care.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Darrell, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I wish I would have kept in touch with Darrell after graduating from Wittenberg. Darrell and I were really good friends at Witt; we both tried out for the basketball team and were the last two players cut. Somehow that forged a strong bond between us. I served with Darrell (Lew) Lewis, for the last 5 months of my time in Shindand. He was a great soldier who carried himself with confidence and pride. Darrell, You were one of the greatest people to ever enter my life. I cherish every second that I was blessed to spend with you. I still can not believe that you are gone. You were a Godsend to anyone who was ever privaledged to truly know you. I pray for your family and friends because I can not imagine their pain and suffering because I can barely deal with my own sadness because of your loss sometimes. I take comfort in knowing that God loves you best and that he will take care of you, your wife and your children. It still does not take away my ever present wish that you were still present in the flesh today. I just have to force myself to take comfort in knowing that you are up there watching over all your friends and family and that everything is going to be all right. Just know that you will always be in my thoughts and prayers.
Lewis Family my prayers go out to you all. I know that there are no words that I or anyone could say to make you feel better right now, but I pray that my continuous prayers for you all will bring some kind of comfort during your time of sorrow and sadness.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. Liz, and the rest of the Lewis Family, I send my deepest sympathy for your loss. Darrell, was so inspirational and a shining star in my life. We were good friends who shared some of our good times and our bad times together. He encouraged me so much, especially when I felt like life was beating me down. HE always told me, that he was not finished yet and that I shouldn't be too. He always spoke of how much he wanted to be in the Army, well he has done that and very bravely. I am just sad that we all lost a positive and loving and caring person. Now I have noone to share with, I have truely lost a good friend. My husband and I, along with our family share your grief and sorrow. But hold your heads high, because that is what Darrell would do... We are almost done building our new home, Liz, we would be honored if you came to visit us. I dedicate my next graduation to Darrell, he helped me to keep pushing and achieve my ultimate goal!!!! I miss you so much my friend, I really miss you. I cry as I type this, but I can help it, my heart has been hurt once again. True friends are hard to find, but GENUINE FRIENDS LIKE DARRELL ARE A VERY RARE THING AND YOU REALLY WANNA KEEP THEM A LONG TIME..... AGAIN YOU HAVE MY CONDOLENCES!!!!

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

To the family of Darrell, my grief for the loss of your son is felt. I know what it's like to loose your child in war as my son was killed in action too. It feels that your heart has been ripped from you and you don't understand why this happened to your child. I've felt all you will feel in the coming days and weeks and though I’m not close in relation to area, but I am very close by email. I offer any support to you and your family that I can. It's with the Grace of God that I've gotten through each day and with His healing love and comfort that I've been able to once again sleep at night and not cry each day. Believe me I do know how hard it is. May God continue to heal you and your family and contact me when and if you are ever ready, even if it's to vent or cry.
