Rhett A. Butler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 24, 2007.
Rhett A. Butler tried to enlist twice. The first time he failed a breathing test. A year later, he tried again and passed, only to be told that his body fat was 1 percentage point too high. "He had gained a little weight and had 12 days to lose it," said his sister, Shawna Conway. "He ran twice a day and ate salad and chicken breast. He went back 12 pounds lighter and signed the dotted line." Butler, 22, of Fort Worth, Texas, was killed July 20 by a roadside bomb in Khan Bani Sa'd. He was a 2003 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Lewis. In recent weeks, Butler seemed to have adjusted to the desert. In one of his last messages, he told her that he planned to re-enlist and try out for Special Forces. "He said he knew it might worry me," said his sister, Shawna Conway. "But it was something he had to do for himself." His father had been in the Navy during Vietnam, and several uncles and cousins have served. "Our family had always done it," said his father, David Butler. "So I didn't discourage it." He also is survived by his mother, Sereta Ramsey, and stepmother, Janice Butler.

Hello Sweet Rhett, another year gone without you. Holidays do not mean a lot to me since you left. Hope the Angels are happy having you there with them because I am surely not happy here without you. Wish I could wake up one morning and see you and asking me " Mama, scratch my back , Mama scratch my arm ." Think the Angels would agree to that with permission from our Heavenly Father? If not, I will meet you at our rainbow. I love you with every bit of my heart. Mom

I am finding it increasingly impossible to find an appropriate outlet for the grief I still suffer, the agony I feel because you are gone. No, you are not my son or my brother, but you are the protector of my family, the hero of my nation. You will never be forgotten as long as I am alive, and I am making sure that your name and your courage live on through my children, and their children. You are missed with profounding grief and sadness, but remembered with gladness, smiles and laughter. You did not die in vain, but then you know that standing there by God.

In Memory of Rhett ~ (Debra Estep)

July 20, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Rhett, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Your family grieves for you tremendously, but you are remembered in ways you could never have imagined. Your sisters are in shock, but unfortunately shock will subside and hurt will set in. Dear Cpl. Rhett Butler’s Family and Friends,

Although some time has passed, today I am writing today to let to let you know I continue to keep each of you in my thoughts and prayers, as I have been since learning the news of Rhett---- although I don’t believe ever I met Rhett, when visiting back at Glen Rose during recent years. However, you remember my late Mother, Delorees Fallers. In addition, my brother, Carl, joins with my family and me in expressing our sincere condolences to each of you at this time.

With honor, courage, and vigilance, Rhett served our beautiful nation.
As in all of the other wars and conflicts engaged in by our wonderful country--- brave and honorable soldiers, sailors, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Sea Bees have served ---- and like each of them Rhett was over there for all of us.

Thanks to his freely and courageously serving for all of the citizens of the United States of American we can continue to enjoy our freedom.

Because of his valor one day our great democracy shall honor all who volunteered to preserve our peace---each one a Hero--- like Rhett. Until then--- please know you are not alone today. Rhett is not forgotten presently. Rhett will never be forgotten.

(Additionally, in honor of my two nieces-by-marriage Linda’s son, Charlie Powell: active in Sea Bees/ served one tour in Iraq) and Paula’s son, Jacob Foster, who served in Iraq: U. S. Air Force.)

May God be with each of you at this time and as time passes,
And may God bless our Troops,

Charlie Belle (GRHS Alumna), Jim, and Kevin

I am so sorry to hear about another fallen! I know there are no words that I can say to ease your pain! The loss of a child is something that is the most difficult thing to bare. We can only pray that one day we will be together again. I was told that if you stretch a piece of string a mile long and line that string with beads, the beads would resemble eternity. Life here on earth is equal to “only one bead”. We have only a short time here compared to the time we will spend in eternity with our loved ones. The only thing I can say is let faith keep you grounded in your life and hold on to your loved ones! This will help you through!
This is what helps me get through my days, I too have lost. My son entered into the Heavens to be with our Lord!
God Bless Your Family!

Thank you for being brave. You are a hero and will not be forgotten.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there... I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow...
I am the diamond glints on snow...
I am the sunlight on ripened grain...
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you waken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of gentle birds in circling flight...
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry-
I am not there... I did not die...

Shawna, I just found out about your loss. My condolences to you and your family. I remember the days that you would talk about your brother and how you worried about him. Worry no more, he is in the best of care with our Lord. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.

August 3, 2007

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. Dear Family and Friends of Rhett Butler,
I know I didn’t know Rhett very well but I know he was a great guy. I know he wanted to make a difference and he did. I know he was a great guy because of the stories I have heard. I also know that he was a great guy because any man willing to give his life to protect his country is great. Thank you Cpl Rhett Butler for protecting me and our country.

Rhett,
Thank you for your unselfish sacrifice. I would have never dreamed that the little boy who lived down the street from me would grow up to be a hero. You played with my son, were best friends with my nephew and was a part of the family. I will always remember your big heart and unforgettable smile. What a privilege it was to have known you and to have you protect my freedom. I will forever hold you in my heart.
Rhett’s Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I know that your hearts are heavy but take comfort in knowing that Rhett will never be forgotten. My prayers are with you.

Mike and I have just stood back in awe, watching our family, our town, our Army and our Country mourn the loss of Rhett. He was our family here in earth, but he will forevermore be our family in heaven. I lost a brother, but not to war. You lost a brother and a son; but your loss is our country's gain. It takes a great act of courage to stand firm, stand up and be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. You are now making that sacrifice. Rhett's death is not in vain. He rests in the very shadow of the Lord. We love you always. Mike and Debbie.

Rhett's Family- I was lucky to have had the chance to get to know Rhett. He was one awesome guy! always smiling, always laughing and making others laugh, and above all always PROUD to be serving our country! I'm gonna miss that twinkle in his eyes and the (its wasnt me, I'm inocent) smile he had! I will think about Rhett everytime I see a flag or military personel. I will also tell my son about the friend I had and what he did for our country and why when we enjoy the simplest freedoms its because Rhett and thousands others steped up and gave there lives for our country and the people of Iraq! Rhett you will be missed more then words can say and I know your in a better place and at peace. Rhett Butler YOU are my HERO!!

We send our heartfelt sympathy to you and your family during this difficult time. Our son, PFC Chris Crank, is also a Stryker driver and was Rhett's best friend in Ft. Lewis and in Iraq. We had the pleasure of speaking to Rhett while in Ft. Lewis. Chris would call us and Rhett would also get on the phone. We also had the pleasure of meeting Rhett in person in Ft. Lewis before deploying to Iraq. Rhett was such a special young man with a beautiful smile. I know now why Chris called him his best friend. Rhett was a true American hero who will be missed by all of the CAV Scouts who all became "brothers" and stuck by each other. I can't imagine what you are going through but during the days and weeks ahead, look to God for peace, strength and comfort and the love of family and friends.

I am very proud of Rhett as he gave the ultimate sacrifice. When our country asked him to give, he gave all. Rhett is now sharing a soldiers watch in heaven with my son who was killed in action Feb. 14th, 2007. Thank you for the gift you shared with our country. The loss of a brother, son, father, wife, mother or any other member of the family is unbearable. The hole left seems bottomless and no how hard we try it will never be full. Your family is in my prayers and thoughts daily. Rhett is now a guardian angel to his fellow troops and those that follow. God bless you Rhett and your family. I wish you peace and strength.
