Charles was a bright young man. He had a way about him that honestly, I don't think a soul on this earth ever disliked this man. It's been nearly ten years and I remember his last moments as if it were yesterday. I miss you buddy. I'm glad I had the chance to serve with such an exemplary man as you were. See you on the green! 7th first!

I still miss you brother. I think about you everyday. Almost 8 years and sometimes I still wake up shocked that you're gone. We had plans of coming back to Stewart and go out on the town. It's only a raincheck. I'll see you again on the green.

I am a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Christian Church in Aliso Viejo Ca. For Memorial Day Fr. Fred Bailey hangs the names of all of our fallen Hero's above the alter. After Mass he invites us to pick a name out of the basket so that we can pray for our soldier and his family. I am originally for N.Y. and hoped to get someone from my state, and I was honored to pick your son's name. Our family has kept you in our prayers, and we have a picture of Charlie in our home. God bless you.

as i sit here and watch the memorial day concert i cant help but to think of you and what you did for our country. my memories of you sit soft in my heart, from the time you came into school with a mullet, and how we all giggled at your courage to be different. and the time where you lent your heart and hand to me at a school dance because i was sad to have no one to dance with, you were there for me.. and i will never forget that.. i know you were put on this earth to be an angel to everyone that was lucky enough to grace your path. and now, as its been almost 2 yrs since youve passed, i know your an angel looking over us.. i will never forget you charlie, thank you for everything..
until we meet again that one fine day..

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Charles, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Charles' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.
...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

Hey Charlie, We are getting along as best we can. There is not a day that goes by that you don't occupy our minds. Sometimes we laugh and sometimes we cry and there are times we do both. We have all sensed that you are with us and hope you will always be there. We still love you so very much and remain proud of the man you became.

Barb & Charlie,
With the holidays upon us, know that extra prayers are being said for you, Brianne, Shannon, and Patrick to get through this time without Charlie with you. Even though he is no longer on earth with all of us, he's in Heaven watching over. I want you to know how thankful we are for Charlie being in our lives from the time he was born and being such a special boy and young man. I know I don't always say things the right way, but I want to Thank you both for raising such a fine, upstanding, courageous, beautiful young man who stood for his beliefs and protected all of us because of them. Know that God and Mom are taking perfect care of him. God Bless you all. We love you and I commend you for the courage and grace you have shown over the past few months.

Spc. Bilbrey will be entered in the History of the fallen heros of the Division. I believe that the 3rd ID was better for having such a man as a member on its rolls. He is in that special place in heaven reserved for all of our fallen heros. Across the river with his brothers in arms under the shade of the trees.

May God grant you peace in the time of war. Love in the time of hate and though sorrow may last for the night, joy comes with the morning. Although darkness is still upon your hearts, God's grace is sufficient and will carry you through. Charles is surely being held in the palm of God's own hand.

I've been mulling this over for a month trying to find something wonderful to say, but all I can say is that we loved Charlie like he was one of our own children. We will miss him being at our house and playing video games. We will miss his lop-sided grin - like he was always plotting something!!
But we commend you Barb, Big Charlie, Brianne, Shannon and Patrick, for your grace in this horrible time - you set a wonderful example of pride and love! We love you and are always here for you!

I never knew Spc. Bilbrey, however he has touched my life forever. I happened to be traveling through Owego one beautiful Saturday morning when I noticed Boy Scouts lining the street with American Flags, I could see a horse drawn wagon, I faintly heard a single drum, family walking behind the drummer, family and friends following in vehicles. I stopped the car; I was uncertain what to do. My wife by my side, another couple in the back seat...not a dry eye in the car. Hand over my heart, prayers pouring from my mind for American Freedom, peace, and for the Bilbrey family. The cost of war has come to me, surprisingly it came while I was enjoying my freedom.
Thank you Charles for the ultimate sacrifice, may God always be with you. I can't express the sorrow I feel. For his mother, father, sisters and brother please know that Charles has reached far beyond the borders of Owego, NY and will do so for all time.
Please know that I will never forget him; even though I never knew him. As he rolled by in that horse drawn wagon he reached out to touch and remind me of how much we have to be thankful for, to remind me of the high cost of freedom.
May you find comfort in this difficult time of loss; I honorably close with the highest regard and respect for Charles and the entire Bilbrey family.

You fought for our country
You fought for our freedom
You didn't do it because you wanted
It's because you cared about your country.
You knew this could happen
But still didn't care
That's what you wanted for your country
For those who were born, living
You wanted them to have the freedom
So you are remembered here in the U.S.A.
For what you have done, you'll be remebered
Your family shall be proud of you
And so will the community.
You will never be forgotten.
My family and I show our sympathies for the family of Charles E. Bilbrey Jr.

GOD’S SPECIAL ANGEL
Could fireflies really be floating angels from high?
Sparkling like bangles as they fly in the sky
Only God’s special angels are allowed to come to earth
Giving us mortals a glimpse of heavens wondrous rebirth
His newest angel named Charles we all know and love
He is watching over us from close above
On a warm summer night you will be able to see
Him down here floating and twinkling from tree to tree
Protecting and watching over his loved ones and friends
He will be with us until we all meet again
High above in that wondrous place
When we come to meet our loving Lord face to face
I do not know your son or family, but wished to do something for you. The only thing I could do was this poem. I pray it may bring you comfort later. I have one cousin who served in Iraq. Another cousin and step-nephew are currently there.

Bilbrey family,
I was one of Charlie's teachers for a couple of years, and I just wanted you to know that I loved your son and brother very much. Charlie knew me as Mrs. Dunbar. He was a great young man. He had such a great sense of humor, and vivid gorgeous blue eyes. I always knew that if he got that hair of his cut that he would reveal stunning eyes. I just never dreamed that I would see his eyes looking at me from the television screen like this. I did not attend the services because I knew that there would be hundreds there, but I did want you to know that Charlie was a delight to so many people in his lifetime, and I am so proud of the man that he became. He came so far and overcame so much to get to where he was. To have become class treasurer, on the football team, and to have had so many friends, wow. I had the priviledge to run into Charlie a couple of years ago now at the Owego High School and he was pleased to see me and talk to me and I couldn't help but to just watch him and shake my head at all the changes that he had made. He was truly inspirational to me. Oh, I am so sorry that his life was cut short. I am sure that he would have continued to grow and be a wonderful person. My sympathies are with you. The world has lost a wonderful man.

Dear Family of Charles Bilbrey: I am so very saddened for you and your loss of your precious son. I will pray for you all and Charles that you will all find peace during this tragic time in your lives. Nothing will ever take away the pain of losing your son but I pray that knowing others are mourning with you will offer some sense of comfort. I'm sorry for you loss and wish there was more i could do for you. Charles was a great person who I am glad to say I knew and went to school with. Thank you for bringing him in to this world and letting us share what time we could with him he will be greatly missed!

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Shannon and Brianne, My deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family. I remember Charlie as a freshman in high school and as a graduating senior. He would come to the library and chat with me while he chose a few books to borrow. He usually made me laugh and all I could say was "Charlie, Charlie, Charlie" and just chuckle.
I guess you could say I watched him grow from a little freshman to a young man that knew what he wanted to do after school. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow.

We are grateful for the sacrifice that the Bilbrey Family made so that others may enjoy a freedom that they never new. Freedom is never free. Someone always pays the price. I thank God for the gift that Charles Jr. gave to another nation as he served the Army to the best of his God given ability. He paid the price. Now he dances and worships on streets of gold with the King 24/7. Unspeakable joy is now his. Welcome home oh good, and faithful Son! Charles is a name of German origin that means "Free Man". How fitting for such a hero! God Bless the Bilbrey's. We love you.

Perhaps they are not stars,
but rather openings in Heaven
where the love of our lost ones
pours through
and shines down upon us
to let us know
they are happy.

i have never met your son, but I am proud to say that HE served our country in our time of need, to protect our freedom. May god bless you at this time, and may it give you strength that he did not die in vain. He gave his life so we could have ours. May god somehow lessen your burden as you grieve through this tremendously difficult time.

I have watched Charlie grow from a young boy many years ago in Boy Scouts (Troop 38) with my son Michael Hopkins; to graduating from O.F.A with my other son James. I am honored to have known him and privileged to have watched him grow to be such a wonderful and brave man. He served his country well and gave all he could. We will forever be indebted for the sacrifice he made for all of us and our freedom. May God watch over you and your family and bring you comfort during this time of grief. You will be in my family’s thoughts and prayer; and Charlie will not be forgotten.

To The family, I personally don't know you but we are the parents of Terry and Ginny Hills who knew your family well. We lived on Valley road for 30 years before moving to Fla. in 1988.May god be with you through this time of sorrow and great loss. I cannot know how I would handle the loss of a child, but know that God will bring you through this and there will be a day of joy when we all meet again in heaven. Just know that Charles did not die in vain, he was a true hero! Betty & Maynard Hills

"Softly falls the light of day,
While our campfire fades away.
Silently each scout should ask:
"Have I done my daily task?
Have I kept my honor bright?
Can I guiltless sleep tonight?
Have I done and have I dared
Everything to be prepared.?"
"May the great Master of all Scouts be with us 'til we meet again,"
You will never be forgotten

He gave all he could for this great nation of ours out of love for us all. We cannot thank him for his service in protection of us, but hopefully it will bring you his family a little consolence to know that we do thank him and all others who are there serving us and who have lost their lives in our protection also. May your faith bring you comfort in these very difficult times.
I do not know any of you but just wanted you to know how much we appreciate your son and others too.

Charlie and Barb, a friend of mine wrote this poem for Charlie-I hope it helps in some small way:
God has taken a Special Hero Today
Take him in your arms and cradle him softly
Unselfishly Charlie went ahead, to guide our way,
To clear a path
Till God calls us home to stay
To embrace our souls,To quench our thirst at last
On the wings of a Dove, I send you my everlasting Love....
As everyone stands in solemn embrace
Pondering the Farewell they all must face
Know Charlie would never want you to be Blue
Just Cherish the Memories as he will too..
Wherever you go, Whatever you do
Just know that Charlie is there with you too
With Pen in Hand, I will gently trace
His Loving, Caring, Smiling Face
-Jane Sperzel
You will always remain "Little" Charlie in our hearts forever. Remembering your infectious laugh and smile and how you gave your "all" in everything you did. You are a true testament to your parents. You are a HERO in everyone's eyes who knew and loved you. All our love-Aunt Mo & Uncle Mark.

Dear Barb and family,
We never know what lies around the next corner in our lives and how strange some things happen.I just happened to be looking up a cousins viewing information and saw this , I cant tell you how sorry I am for you and your family. I was in one of your nursing classes a few years back, so i knew the name was familiar to me. I have moved out of the area and now live in FL.I hardly ever read the paper from there. Our oldest daughter and her husband are stationed in Iraq right now too, so it really hits close to home. It's so hard to find comforting words for you right now but know that I am thinking of you and sending prayers to ease your pain. With deepest sympathy ,
