Daniel A. Leckel loved sports, but even admirers said he didn't have a lick of talent. Instead of giving up, Leckel volunteered to help manage teams. "He acted more like a coach than a player," said Steven Prock, the head of Leckel's high school's athletic department. "I would always joke that Daniel Leckel was the only one we couldn't replace." Leckel, 19, of Medford, Ore., was killed July 25 in Baghdad by small-arms fire. He was a 2005 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Riley. He spent a semester at Rogue Community College. He hoped to become a sports writer, and had once shadowed a local sports reporter. Prock said Leckel had an easy way about him, and that he never complained. "I took him home every night after practice," Prock said. "I looked forward to ending my day with him because he had a pretty good outlook." His favorite foods were ravioli and Skittles candy. A newspaper clipping from 2005 told a story about how he couldn't get a ride to see his team play, so he walked 58 miles. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Richard and Cathy LeCrone.

Do you remember me America? I was the one which others cared not to be. I went where others feared to go and did what others failed to do. I asked nothing from those who gave nothing. I reluctantly, accepted the thought of eternal loneliness should I fail. I have seen the face of terror, felt the chill of fear, warmed to the touch of love. I have hoped, pained, and cried. But foremost, I have lived in times others would say are best forgotten. At the very least, in these later days, I am able to say with the greatest pride... that I was indeed an American Soldier!

Much has happened since you've been gone. Tomorrow is Veterans Day when we'll remember your ultimate sacrifice and all your brothers and sisters in arms that never got to grow old and reap the rewards of a good life. More specifically our troops in Iraq are coming home from the Country where you laid down your life. While there is still some violence you sacrifice has permitted a opportunity for a Nation to have the liberties which we've enjoyed since our founding. From your Barracks Room mate with love eternal! I really don't know how to write this. The last time I saw you we were in a God forsaken land watching eachothers back and in the blink of an eye you were gone! I see that day every time I close my eyes so I really don't sleep anymore. I had to account for all your gear which took me along time to be able to do that. I pulled out the story you let me read as you were writing it and all I could do is sit and remember. Losing you they may aswell have cut me in half. We shared our birthdays, our love of football, pizza, even our favorite soda Mr. Pib. And yes, I forgive you for eating my mac&cheese. What I mean to say is; I will tell your story to all whom I meet for the rest of my life that you preserved by giving up yours! I will love you forever brother!

To the parents of Daniel, I would like to extend my heart felt sorrow as I know what you are going through and what you will yet go through in the coming weeks. I too am the mother of another fallen soldier and with God's continued support in my life I try to reach out to other who might need the support of someone who has been where you are. I want to offer you the support you may need to contact me anytime so that you may vent, talk or just seek comfort I am here for you. As a Gold Star Mother I've reached out through God's blessings to many across the country and we have a good support group. I just wanted to say how thankful I am for the sacrifice that Daniel made. I was unable to come home for the funeral, but my mom said that the entire town of Glendale was covered in flags. I will show my son your picture and tell him that YOU are a REAL hero. Your myspace says that if you were a superhero you would be spiderman, but I think it should have just said be yourself. Please know that we love you and pray for you and your family.. And nothing has ever touched us so much. God bless you Daniel, our hero.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
