James D. Doster Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 2, 2007.
James D. Doster was quiet and organized, his mother said. She laughed when recalling how he and his brother, Rob, cleaned out the garage after his father's death. "He even made labels for the keys," Billie Doster said. "He came in and said 'Mom, did you know dad never threw anything away even if it were broken?'" Doster, 37, of Pine Bluff, Ark., was killed Sept. 29 in a roadside bombing and gunfight in Baghdad. He was assigned to Fort Riley. "My heart goes out to the family and loved ones of Sgt. First Class James D. Doster as we honor his bravery and service to our military," said U.S. Rep. Mike Ross. "Sgt. Doster selflessly gave his life to serve our country and he will forever be remembered as a hero, a son, a father and a husband. I will continue to keep his family in my thoughts and prayers." He is survived by his wife, Amanda, and daughters, Kathryn, 6 and Grace, 3. "Kathryn was counting down the days until he was supposed to be home," Billie Doster said. "She doesn't really understand. All she says is, 'It's not fair.' They had so many plans for when he came home."

Doster, I remember when you were a young private at your 1st duty assignment in Germany. You used to look up to me to look out for you. It should've been somebody else & not you lost in Baghdad that day. You were a good man & grew into a great soldier who took care of his men. I always wanted to reconnect with you & looked for you several times over the years, I wish i didn't have to find you this way though. I heard you died a good death & that's the best we can ask for in death. I'll miss you & hope to meet your beautiful daughters some day soon. Farewell for now. I hope we are allowed to sit together again someday at a table of Honorable Men on the other side of this life.

June 7, 2010

It s Monday June 7th, 2010. My name is Stanley Dodson, JR. I retired from the Army in May 2001 as a SFC. Now, my wife and I have a tee shirt shop in West Yellowstone, Montana. Two women came into our shop this morning and said they were from Grand Junction. In the coversation I found out I knew the one woman's daughter and was best friends with the recruiter wo signed her up for the Army, SSG James Doster. Our desks were next to each other. We worked together for 1-1/2 years. He was as close to a brother as I have had since m brother was killed in 1969. The women then informed me that James had been killed in Iraq. It brought tears to my eyes. I can't believe he is gone. I had been looking for him on the internet for a couple of years now. I am so sorry that he is gone. It hurts me to my soul as I'm sure it does for you, his family. If you would ever like to talk I would love to meet you on Facebook or in person. I didn't know he had married. I am very happy he had you in his life.

My sincerest apologies to you and your family Amanda. I wish I could change things. I will always remember James and the love you had amongst your family.

Michael Ward

December 16, 2009

Dear Amanda and the lil ones,
I am Spc. Michael Ward from Chickamauga, Ga. I had the honor of meeting you when 1st platoon came to see you that day at Divsion HQ on Fort Riley. At the time when we met I couldnt find the words. Now I have. I want you to know that before seargent Doster got to 1st platoon we were all over the place and everyone was miserable. Our original platoon seargent had bailed on us and since we didnt have an E-7 in our platoon we were doing more than our share of the crap work. Day one with SFC Doster that changed. He had a sort of magnitism towards him that when he spoke you didnt just have to listen you wanted to listen. You wanted to do everything just right but not from fear of punishment but because he was looking out for "us", (lower enlisted)and we wanted him to look good to 1st Sgt. and let him know that he could count on us because we knew we could count on him. 29 Sept. 07, changed my life forever. Although I only knew him for a short period of time, what he taught me will echo throughout my life until I meet him again.

To the family or Sgt. Doster,

Almost 2 years have gone by and I wish there were words to help heal, even more I wish there was a way to undo what has happened. I never had the honor to meet our fallen hero, but someone I love very much was with him that day, September 29, 2007. Not a day goes by that Sgt. Doster doesn't cross our minds. My soldier NEVER removes his rememberance bracelet with Sgt. Doster's name on it. He is no longer in the military but that day changed his life forever, he thought the world of him and from what I hear about fallen our hero, that was easy to do. My heart, my prayers, and my deepest most sincere apologies go out to the family. You will be in our hearts forever.

Sharing a smile with a cup of coffee.

Dear Amanda and Girls,
I have known about James for a year now and have been trying to think of things to say to you. I don't know if you remember but James was my Son Owen and his friend Kevin's recruiter in Miles City. Owen was very proud when James came to his graduation. I think he even called him a time or two when he was in Germany. When we lost Owen in Iraq in 2004 I know it had to be very hard on James and I was so thankful that I got to see him at Owen funeral and give him a big hug and let him know that in no way did I blame him. I know that Owen and James are in a better place but it don't stop us from missing them very much. Please give your little girls a big hug from me. You are in our thought and prayers.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know James, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

My heart goes out to anyone who knew Jim. What a void, there must be, in their hearts. I knew Jim many years ago. Even though he defended the United States of America, he still maintained his sense of how small he was, in the scheme of things. God bless him, sleep in heavenly peace my friend. And God Bless his dear family. May you find peace, some how, in this very sorrowful time.

I am writing to offer my condolences to your family over the loss of your HERO Sgt 1st Class James D Doster. I also lost my son in Iraq on May 6/2007, so I can well understand your pain of losing a loved one so dear.

When things settle down, I recommend that you contact a man named Michael Reagan @

He will draw one portrait of the fallen soldier. He does this for free and will draw any picture of your choosing. He has drawn presidents and other celebrities. My husband and I got one and it has helped me with the healing process. Michael is a truly gifted artist that captures the very essence of the person he draws. I look at my picture everyday and it gives me a connection that I cannot explain.

I pray you will be guided by a higher power to give you peace, comfort and strength in this time.

The price Sgt. 1st Class James D. Doster and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten. Please know how Deeply Sorry I am to learn of the loss of this Brave Soldier.

May James rest safely now, in the Loving Care of God and may the Peace of God be with the Doster family.
There will Never Be Enough Ways to Humbly Thank these Young Heroes for their Sacrifices, my brother among them. Killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.

"I consider that our present sufferings.
are not worth comparing with the glory
that shall be revealed in us."
~ Romans 8:18 ~

May you find Peace in knowing the love and memories you have of James, will remain in your heart forever and that this Country Will Not Forget his Sacrifice.
You are in my thoughts and prayers

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!
