Mr. Crowell (call sign Ozzy)

I can't believe it's two years already... I pray that your wife, boys and all family and friends are doing well. I wanted to send a note to let you know that I have not forgotten. I still remember your consistent calming demeanor - no matter how bad things got you always knew what to say or do to get us motivated again. Sometimes when work gets crazy and I need help, I long for the opportunity to go in your office, pull up a chair and let you pour some wisdom over me. I appreciate all the talks we had and your words of encouragement. The example you set as a leader has become my personal standard. You are truly missed.

Thank you for laying your life down so that others may live. You are truly an American Hero

Tom,

On 1 Nov 2009, the men and women assigned to “The Phoenix”, Joint Base Balad, Iraq, proudly honored you, Dave and Nate. We assembled at the South ECP, the last place on U.S. controlled soil that each of you traveled prior to breaking wire while enroute to your mission. We gathered around our MRAPs and paid tribute to the ultimate sacrifice each of you made on that exceptionally memorable and heartbreaking day. We posted an individual portrait of each of you on each MRAP, as well as a portrait of all three of you on another MRAP, draped with a United States flag. Each member of our team paid tribute to all three of you and reflected on your dedicated service to our country. In addition, your names were proudly mentioned during the Intentions portions of the All Souls Mass. Lastly, one of our team members chose this day to perform his reenlistment ceremony, which was conducted in front of the base memorial bearing your names, and all other fallen heroes that paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. Tom - you will never be forgotten. You and your entire family are in our thoughts and prayers and we stand tall knowing that you’re watching over us as we continue with our mission.

From the men and women of “The Phoenix”, Balad, Iraq

I had the distinct pleasure of "escorting" a group of young men, including your son, Eric, from Monument, Colorado to a camp for them outside Divide, today. I had Eric as a passenge on my motorcycle for the last 15 miles or so of their journey. I want to tell you how awesome it was to be even just a SMALL part of honoring your husband and your children's father in this way. I know it's been almost 2 years since his death, but my wife and I would like for you to know that our prayers and thoughts are with you all. Thank Eric for me, for being such a great passenger, and for allowing me to take part in his special day on his journey to the camp.

Carol and Boys,

You likely don't remember me, but I want to let you know, as others have, that Tom is still fondly remembered around the world. I was in the JAG office at Spang where Tom and I worked many difficult cases together. Tom was, and remains in our memories, a great man.

While assigned to the Pentagon, I was fortunate to live close enough to attend Tom's moving funeral and make a couple return visits to his grave. I moved away in Summer 2008, but was back in DC 3 weeks ago for a TDY and was able to stop by Arlington to spend a little time with Tom. I want you to know that each time I've visited him, his grave has been well kept, everything in perfect order, just as he would expect and deserve. Before leaving his grave it is always my honor to salute him.

Know that Tom lives on in the memories of all who had the privilege of encountering him. If there's ever anything I can do for your family, please let me know (epmerriam@hotmail).

Just know how much we love and miss you and how important C and the boys are to us; they are our family and we will be there always. Thank you for all of the memories and laughs!

Thomas Crowell, Esq.

January 19, 2009

I didn’t know Master Sgt. Thomas A. Crowell; our paths crossed through the fortune of sharing the same name and the hit results of a Google search.

Reading the obituary of someone who shares your name is a bit of a shock; reading the obituary of a man who gave so much for his country is a tragedy. My heart goes out to his grieving family.

After reading a bit about Master Sgt. Thomas A. Crowell, I was struck by the similarities between us: we were both drawn to a career in law, both believed in the supreme value of freedom and democracy. Master Sgt. Crowell died for those beliefs, and I honor him. I can honestly say that I am proud to share his name.

Respectfully,
Thomas A. Crowell, Esq.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Thomas, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

You are now in great company with God and so many other fallen hero's before and after you. On 5/6/08 my nephew PFC Aaron J. The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to MSgt. Thomas A. Crowell our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Thomas. And to Thomas it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made while serving the U.S. Air Force and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Thomas, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Thomas’ family and loved ones.

Carol, Eric and Ian
There is not enough space to write of all the wonderful memories we made with you and Tom at good ole' Edwards Air Force Base. You both were more than friends, you became extended family. Almost 12 years ago, you and Tom walked into our lives out of pure luck and we have been blessed ever since. You were additional parents to our daughter. As I sat here writing this tonight, our daughter is writing an essay about heroes and her subject is "Mr Tom". The problem...she is limited to 300 words. We all love you dearly and we know that you have the strength and the courage to carry on. Eric and Ian, be proud of your Dad - he was a great man inside and outside of the AF. But let's not forget your Mom - she is incredible...we know first hand because she helped raise our daughter. May time heal your heart and may you find peace in knowing what an incredible sacrifice you all made for our country. THANK YOU. We love you!

November 11, 2007

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Carol, Eric, and Ian,
I don't know where to begin, for my heart still aches for the three of you. As you know, Tom was a very good man, who loved what he did and loved you even more. I learned a lot from him while working for him at Scott. Sitting directly across the hall from him, how could you not. He was very motivated when it came to the military. He believed in bettering himself to get the mission done. I guess that is why he loved to work-out and was very ambitious in getting his degree finished. He was always willing to help me with whatever problem I had. He loved to wear the uniform and was a perfect example of what it meant to be in the United States Air Force. Even though he was the superintendent I believe his heart was truly in the field. He was only truly happy when he was doing field work.

I miss Tom very much, and will always remember him for who he was and what he did for our great country. If you guys need anything, anything at all, don't hesitate to ask. No matter at what point in the future that may be. Remember, that you are all surrounded by people who love and care for you.

Carol,
It has been many years since we worked together at West Boron--way before the boys were even born! I am so saddened by your loss! I thank Tom and men and women just like him that safeguard our freedoms.

Dear Carol, Eric, and Ian--

I don't know where to begin. I am heartbroken over this. I wish I could make all your pain go away. The pain will never go away completely, but it will ease a little. Tom was not only my co-worker, but he was my friend, a very good friend. I feel like I've lost my brother. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you, the boys, your parents, Tom, and the others who have laid down their lives for our freedom. God bless them all. I love you all.

Dear Carol and Eric,

Words cannot express the sorrow I feel for you. You have your memories to hold in your heart forever.

Eric, I won't forget when your dad would show up on party days at school. He would stand at my door with goodies in his hand for all of the third grade kiddos and a big smile on his face.

Thank you for letting me know your dad for just a while.

Carol,

My deepest sympathies go to you and the boys in this time of Tom's passing. Words cannot express my emotions. I can't seem to shake the flashbacks from the time we served together at Spangdahlem. I keep seeing Tom with the mullet wig and how we would laugh at each other for wearing it and all the other laughs we shared at the Det. I am honored and fortunate to have served with Tom. I will never forget him nor the sacrafice he gave our nation. My thoughts, my heart, and prayers are with you and the boys.

God Bless,

Crowell Family,

Just wanted to let you all know; you are in our thoughts and prayers. Tom was an Airman, family man, and a true American. He was in harms way to save the lives of others. When you read the Airman’s creed and the Air Force Core values we can always look and think of Tom and his team. We are here in Japan, but we are still praying and thinking about you each and every day. Tom is going to be greatly missed, but he will not be forgotten.

At my school we were given an assignment to write a poem about a veteran. When I read about Thomas Crowell I knew he was the perfect one to write about. In my opinion he was the perfect example of a Soldier. He put his men and his country before himself, it seemed, with no regrets. I'm sorry to those who have lost a close friend, or family member, it seems that you have lost an amazing person. Thomas Crowell is someone I think I would have loved to meet.

Dear Carol, Eric and Ian; Uncle Don and I are so very saddened by the death of your beloved husband and father. We did not know Tom well, but admired and respected him greatly. We often recall the visit we had with you in California many years ago, before the boys were born. Tom was a warm and friendly man and Uncle Don enjoyed talking with him. We have always had a little photo of the two of you on your wedding day, placed on our book shelves so that we could look at it often and have appreciated the photos of your fine sons that you have sent to us. Every day we pray for the strength, courage and peace of God for you and that He will shower you with the abundance of His grace and mercy in these most difficult days and the days ahead. We love you all. Aunt Bis and Uncle Don
