Benjamin D. Tiffner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 10, 2007.
Captain Benjamin David Tiffner, 31, was killed in action Wednesday, November 7, when his vehicle was struck by an IED while conducting a combat operation in Baghdad, Iraq. Benjamin lived near Nashville, TN and was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lewis Edgar Tiffner, Retired US Army CSGM. Benjamin is survived by his parents, Timothy and Judith Tiffner, two sisters, Rebekah Crain and Sarah Tiffner, and two brothers, Joshua and Seth Tiffner.

Early in life, Benjamin planned to join the military. At 19, he enrolled at the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 2000. After Infantry Officer's Basic Course, Airborne School and Ranger School, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment., at Fort Lewis, Wash., and served as an infantry platoon leader, reconnaissance platoon leader, and company executive officer. He served in Iraq from November 2003 to March 2004. Upon graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course in April 2006, he was assigned to 5th SFG(A) at Fort Campbell, KY.

His awards and decorations include two Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, and the Special Forces Tab.

At the time of his death, Captain Tiffner was a Special Forces Operational Detachment – Alpha team leader assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). While three of Benjamin's ODA team members were injured, no one else was killed in the attack.

Benjamin died a Christian, heartily fulfilling his calling from God. He had talked with his family the day of the attack. To his parents and sister, Ben expressed concern for the spiritual needs surrounding him and resounding confidence that he was where God had led him, Ben confidently stated that he and his men were making a difference in the war effort. In his earthly life, Benjamin Tiffner was wholly dedicated to praising the glorious grace of his God.

Ben grew up both in the Philippines, where his family served as missionaries, and later in the Charleston, West Virginia area. While in high school, Ben played varsity basketball and soccer at Cross Lanes Christian School. He was home-schooled his last three years of high school. He loved competitive sports and hunting, and throughout his career in the Army Ben demonstrated an unusual passion for excellence combined with real personal humility. By God's grace, Ben's thoroughly-converted character made him an outstanding leader, counselor, soldier, friend, son, and brother.

On December 4, 2007, Captain Tiffner will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. The service will be held at Murphy Funeral Home (703 920-4800) at 10:00 AM, and the graveside committal will be at 2PM.

Memorial Day 2017, I remember Ben Tiffner. I knew him as a young man, still a teenager and just a year older than me, when we crossed paths at Camp of the Hills in WV. I got to know him some on a backpacking trip and even then it was easy to picture him as a soldier, with a quiet strength and confidence but a ready smile. I was shocked and saddened to read years later of his death in Iraq. Ben's bravery and sacrifice are still appreciated and are not forgotten.

Dear Tiffner family, may God bless you as you continue to honor the memory of your son and brother. My own brother-in-law graduated from West Point, served in Afghanistan, and is now in ministry to cadets at West Point, so I have just a taste of what Ben's life was like. I am sure only eternity will tell the full story of the lives he touched. To God be the glory!

Ben, the years have seemingly flown by and yet not a day passes when I don't think of you. I remember growing up with you, playing Army with you and Seth, Josh, Jason and Jared Coulter, Andy, Robert Ostman, and a bunch of others. I can still hear your laughter and I remember how much you were a Chicago Bears fan. (By the way, they beat my beloved Packers Monday night). I miss you still. Thank you for your friendship, your service to God and country, and for the example you set for those around you. We will meet again, I'm sure of it. Until that day, just know how much you are still loved and missed, my brother. Now, and always.

Man I miss Ben. He was like no other officer. He took advise from his team members, he worked hard, stayed out of NCO business, and he helped anywhere he could. I wish I could have served with him longer. Ben was an awesome man that had a great relationship with God and friends. I am sure the good lord had his reasons to bring Ben home; but it still hurts. I tell the November 7, 2007 story to my students every class that comes through and hope they learn from our mistakes we made that day so they do not hurt like we do.

During the summer of 1999, I worked at the Civil War Center in Shepherdstown, WV. During that time, Ben completed an internship at the center. We all had a quite a fun time. The last time I saw him was a brief vist the following semester at West Point. Since then, I've wondered what ever happened to Ben. Sadly, I just learned of his brave endeavor and passing for our nation. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Tiffner,

I was thinking of your son Ben and how he must be watching out over you both. I am sure he would love to give you a great big hug with mother's day approaching. I haven't yet visited Arlington Cemetary where he is buried but have remembered him and our conversation (Judy). Every Memorial Day my husband and I bring our dog (Spirit King) there and celebrate with the rest of the "Rolling Thunder" Veterans. The tremendous sacrifice Veterans and their families have made for our freedom. Please know Ben is remembered even though we never met, but we will in heaven with Our Good Lord.

Dear Tiffner Family,

Ben and I were Ranger buddies at SFAS. I went during the summer before my Junior year at West Point and we was a brand new Captain going through the selection process with us. I learned a lot from him professionally and will never forget joking around with him out in the woods of Fort Bragg. I am now an Infantry Platoon leader in the 82nd and just returned from a year in Iraq. I wish I had heard sooner, I was nearby him in Baghdad, but I just heard the news and I wanted to express my condolences to you all. I hope to join SF just like Ben and I hope I can be half the leader he was. God Bless.

Ben was my captain and also a close friend. He never had a doubt about the good he was doing serving in Iraq. Ben's faith in his savior never wavered. I admired his character and conviction, and I can't say enough about his impact on me in the short time that we served together. He taught me about belief in a cause and compassion for your fellow man. His quiet example also taught me about leadership and teamwork. He was more than a teammate, he was a brother. I still miss having him here with me, but I know that where he is now is where he truly deserves to be. Rest in peace, and a job well done Ben.

Dearest Tiffner family,
In Proverbs David speaks of a friend that is closer than a brother. Growing up in a foreign place under harsh conditions seems to have a way of bonding friends and co-workers into much more. It seems when we go seperate ways that we are leaving members of our family. Though we may not have the ability or time to keep up with all those we miss, our thoughts and prayers often include them. We are forced to leave there lives, safety, and protection in the hands of the Lord. It was a shock to my family and I to see Ben's name on a list of those who have given there lives for the safety and freedom we enjoy. We have great sorrow for you in this time of hardship. We rejoice however, knowing that Ben is now in a place where we long to be with our Father in perfect peace and rest.
with deepest sympathy,

Tiffner Family,

I was one of the civilians in attendance at the memorial service. I had the pleasure of knowing Ben as he was stationed at Ft Campbell. I became friends with him and Neal Smiley. Ben was a great person, leader, friend, and example. His character showed in all that he did. If you knew Ben you were better for it. He was an exceptional athlete as well. We played softball, football, basketball, and volleyball together. He was one that lead by example. He always maintained his composer and spirit. One of the many things I admired about him. But most of all, by knowing Ben at all, you would be shown the face of Christ. His testimony and faith was evident in everything Ben did. I thank you for sharing your son and brother. If it weren't for brave soldiers like Ben carrying out their missions, then people like me wouldn't be able to enjoy our freedom each and every day. Forever grateful, we'll miss you Ben.

November 23, 2007

Dear Family and Friends:

Today (November 17), I attended the memorial service for Ben Tiffner at Fort Campbell, Ky. Ben was the son of my cousin and he was killed in Baghdad while on patrol. There were about 30 civilians (Ben's parents/siblings, wives of soldiers, and various friends) and about 300 soldiers with many standing in the foyer and along the sides of the chapel. It was truly a memorable event aimed at his comrades as I do not think the family had much input into the service; however, I was struck by the tremendous bond between the soldiers of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) a/k/a the Green Berets. It was very emotional for me. My esteem for our soldiers' commitment has greatly increased due to this experience as I better understand their loyalty and commitment. Ben was an exceptionally humble man who loved his soldiers and his opportunity to serve in the United States Army. I pray that I will maintain composure at his funeral at Arlington National Cemetery on December 4th.

The service was well planned from the invocation to the benediction. The front of the chapel included flowers, a framed portrait of Ben in full combat regalia, two framed montages of his life, and the symbolic boots, weapon, and beret. Ben's parents and siblings sat in the front row (stage right). The five speakers included Chaplain Dubinin, 5th Special Forces Commander Lieutenant Colonel Miller, and personal tributes by Captain Smiley (his best friend since West Point who escorted Ben's body back to US), Staff Sergeant Young (read Ben's biography with a photo tribute and spoke of how Ben stayed by his bedside for days after a major accident), and Mr. Baumgardner (formerly assigned to assist Ben in the development of Ben's combat unit in Baghdad). Amazing Grace was played on the bagpipes before the "Last Roll Call" when names of several soldiers were called out with the acknowledged response from each soldier EXCEPT for Captain Benjamin David Tiffner. Ben's name was called out three times with a stronger force each time, but still no response; then the Silent Tribute, the Firing of Volleys, and Taps. Before the benediction, the Ballad of the Green Beret was played over the sound system. Afterward, there was a reception at the 5th Special Forces Group Hall where there is exhibits of soldier who have won the medal of honor as well as mementos of previous conflicts/wars.

The entire ceremony was so meaningful beginning with the soldiers directing traffic in honor of their fallen comrade to the token items placed by his soldiers after the service by his boots. Ben's parents and his siblings seemed to hold up much better than me. They had gathered together as a family for the first time since Ben's death only the night before.

Two words stand out to me relative to Ben's death. The first one is that most mysterious word, "Why?" The second word is the what may be known as God's favorite word "Come". I think of the scripture verse, "Come all ye that are heavy laden and I will give you rest." Ben's family must now deal with his earthly possessions including a house, a car, and a motorcycle, but they are at peace knowing that Ben is in heaven with our Lord and Savior.

On the drive back to the Nashville Airport, many hymns came to my mind and all of them seemed appropriate for the moment. Tears came to my eyes as I thought of Ben's life being snuffed out so early, but I am grateful for his 31 years on earth. Let me conclude with one of the beatitudes from Matthew, "Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted."

Sir, I remember serving as your RTO in 3rd PLT, 1-23IN...you told me to call you Ben but I still called you sir. I found out a few days ago about what happened and wanted you to know that you are greatly missed and there are sad hearts in 1-23IN. I know you are in a good place and watching over your brothers. Miss you, sir.

Mr and Mrs Tiffner,

I was deeply saddened to hear about Ben's death today. I was an Assistant S-3 when your son was the Recon Platoon Leader in 1-23IN. Then, I was the Battalion Logistics Officer when Ben was the XO of Bravo Company. In both capacities I worked closely with Ben at Fort Lewis, and in Mosul. I loved working with him for a multitude of reasons. He always maintained an extremely positive attitude, took care of his soldiers, and accomplished his mission. He was an excellent officer and put the needs of others in front his own.

I know that Ben died doing what he loved, and for that I know you are grateful. I have since gotten out of the Army, and much like Forrest Horan, I look at my son every night when he goes to bed, and I thank God for strong and determined men, like Ben, who protect us.

Your and Ben's sacrifice for my family, and all Americans, will never be forgotten. I am extremely proud of having known Ben, having been able to serve with him, and learn from the way he lived his life.

My deepest sympathy goes out to your family. Your loss can never be replaced, but I find peace knowing that Ben is with God, again, protecting us.

Sincerely,

christian Durham

Ben, we had some great times in 1-23 IN together. Many times have I thought about the fun times we had during train-up and the deployment to Iraq. Even though you left the battalion long before me, I always seemed to run across your name and recall the memories of our time as XO’s together. I can’t say thank you enough for the mentorship, leadership, and friendship. My deepest sympathies go out to your family and thank you for your sacrifices.

Hey there sir! I was in your platoon for awhile and we had a great PL, you. I'm sure the guys from HHC 1/23 and everywhere else have much sorrow in their hearts now that your no longer with us. You always led myself and the others of our platoon in the right direction. I remember when we had a long chat on our way to Yakima one day, I still follow the advice you gave me that day. Thanks for everything. May you rest in peace Sir.

To the family of Ben. One of the greatest persons and Leaders that I have ever known. I was his Platoon Sergeant in the Recon Platoon in 1-23 Infanrty, and together we made the best recon Platoon in the Brigade reshaping doctrine in the newly formed Stryker Brigade, being recognized on several occasions which is a direct reflection of his execllent leadership style. The men of the recon Platoon loved him very much, and they would do anything for him. The Army lost a Great leader and the rest of us lost a great friend. He will be missed very much. I am so sorry for your loss, God Bless. "Go Deep"

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of this brave soldier. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family and friends during this time of sorrow. No words can express the sadness you must be feeling. However, remember that he is a true American hero who will not be forgotten. He was fighting for the weak and downtrodden, trying to give them the freedoms that many in our own country take for granted. I, my children, and all of America are indebted to him forever. Thank you Capt. Tiffner for your service to our great country. Again I am so sorry for your loss. God rest your soul young soldier.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Tiffner, Seth, Josh, Becky and Sarah,

I went to school with Ben, Seth and Josh at CLCS in Junior High and interacted with all of you through Awana at Bible Center. I have moved from Charleston after college and have not seen any of you for many years. In fact, I doubt you even remember me. I remember Ben, though.

We were in the same grade at an age when it is easy for kids to fall into selfishness, shallowness and mean-spiritedness. Ben did not. I always remember him as genuine, kind and humble. This world could use a little more of those qualities that he displayed at a young age.

I never knew Ben as an adult, but based on his accomplishments and obvious bravery, I wanted to communicate to you that I believe I had the pleasure of knowing a brave, honorable man in his formative years. You should all be proud to have raised and molded such a person.

I commend Ben for his bravery, dedication, hard work, and service to our country.

My thoughts and prayers are with you as you cope with this horrible loss.

Dear Tim, Judy, Becky, Josh, Seth & Sarah,
We have so many wonderful memories of your years here with us in the Philippines! Your family is such an example of faithfulness to the Lord. We just want you to know that we are praying for you all in your time of grief. Reading the things Ben's fellow soldiers wrote show us what kind of man he was. We know you are proud of him! May God comfort you as only HE can. We love you!

Tim and Judy and all,

I'm having trouble expressing what I want to say to you today. If I had called or e-mailed every time I have thought about you and prayed for you in the last week, you would be sick of me!

I know that Ben was doing what he loved, but I also know that he was doing what he did so bad things like what happened to Martin and me don't happen to others. I was so grateful to the soldiers who flew me out of the jungle the day Martin died and I was rescued. And I know that Ben was praying for us during our year of captivity.

A friend of Ben's called me today just to chat and make sure I had heard the news. He was a total stranger but by the time he got off the phone, I felt as if I had made a friend. He said such kind things about Ben and called him "a terrific leader." You must be very proud of him!

"All praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the source of every mercy and the God who comforts us. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others." II Cor. 1:3

You as a family held us up during our trial. Now it is time for me to hold you up!

With love to you all,

Gracia Burnham

I did not know Captain Benjamin D. Tiffner. However, his is a son of every American, one in whom we are so proud of and very grateful to for his heroic sacrifice for freedom. Benjamin, you are my brother in Christ and that gives us great comfort for now. Rest in peace until that day when we can join you there. My sincerest sympathies go to the Tiffner family and friends.
