Phil Carey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 10, 2009.
NEW YORK (AP) - Phil Carey, best known for his role as business tycoon Asa Buchanan in the ABC soap opera "One Life to Live," has died. He was 83.

Carey died at his New York City home Friday following a battle with lung cancer, according to ABC network officials.

"His presence will always be a part of 'One Life to Live,'" said Frank Valentini, the show's executive producer. "The best way to describe Phil was bigger than life. Like Asa, he possessed an undeniable quality that drew you to him."

Born Eugene Joseph Carey on July 15, 1925, in Hackensack, N.J., Cary began his film career with a part in "Operation Pacific," starring John Wayne.

This led to contracts with Warner Bros. and Columbia Pictures and starring roles with some of Hollywood's legendary actors, including Gary Cooper in "Springfield Rifle," Henry Fonda in "Mister Roberts," Peter Fonda in "Fighting Mad" and Tyrone Power in "The Long Gray Line." He also starred with Fred MacMurray and Kim Novak in "Pushover."

Carey's prime-time television credits include starring roles in "Philip Marlowe," "Laredo" and "The Untamed World." Guest-star appearances include "Gunsmoke," "All in the Family," "Little House on the Prairie" and "Police Woman."

Additionally he toured in such stage plays as Arthur Miller's "All My Sons" and "Cyrano de Bergerac."

Carey originated the role of Asa Buchanan in 1980 and played the billionaire tycoon until the character died in his sleep in August 2007. But Carey was brought back in video wills and was last seen on the show on Dec. 29.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen, and their two children, Shannon and Sean, as well his three children - Lisa, Linda and Jeff - from a previous marriage.

The death comes a few weeks after the passing away of another former "One Life to Live" cast member, Clint Ritchie, who originated the role of Clint Buchanan.

Phil was the best person to give Asa Buchanan life, he was my "uncle Asa" (since his character had my last name). Just watching a Daniel Boone show, and when I heard Phil's voice, before I even looked up i knew it was him, I knew! Love seeing this great man perform. RIP

Phil and Family,

I enjoyed watching you on One Life To Live, which is now off the air.I enjoyed you in westerns, and you were a true actor. You'll not be forgotten, and your family will forever miss you.
We only knew you through TV,but felt you put yourself in your characters so we'd know "you".You were fun to watch as you "put the screws" to your rivals on OLTL.You're probably letting your fierceness show up above in heaven too.
There's probably never a dull moment there for sure.Ha!Ha!
We hope your family has healed alittle as time passes.Life can be hard when love one's pass, and we have to do our best to go on.God is there for us,and we only need to ask for comfort.God be with you all always. You'll be reunited again in heaven, and all will be well again. Thanks for all the years of TV entertainment Phil"Asa".

Philip Carey was a fine actor with remarkable screen presence, no matter who was sharing the scene with him. He is memorable, for example, in MR. ROBERTS among an all-star cast including James Cagney, Henry Fonda, William Powell and Jack Lemmon.

Mr. Carey's thoughtful performances as a gay man acquainted with Archie Bunker in a powerful ALL IN THE FAMILY episode, and a legendary gunfighter who became a dedicated law abiding medical doctor following a violent confrontation with Lucas McCain that both men survived but indirectly resulted in the death of the gunfighter's wife in THE RIFLEMAN, perfectly illustrate the humanity that distinguishes the most resolute and endearing characters portrayed by Mr. Carey.

Philip Carey's 6'4" athletic physical stature, decisive and articulate masculine voice, Marine Corps posture, and friendly yet firmly defined personality all played crucial roles in his successful show business career, but those traits don't tell the entire story.

Mr. Carey, like another favorite actor of mine Humphrey Bogart, gave his most remarkable film and television characters the same intelligence, dignity, compassionate humanity, and uncompromising personal integrity that his colleagues agree defined Philip Carey himself.

With sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Carey, whose 2009 death I became aware of after watching his THE RIFLEMAN episode recently on MeTV.

May the God of comfort and tender mercies continue to comfort your family and friends, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."" Please accept my sincere condolences during this time of your loss.

May 17, 2010

To the Carey family. May you continue to treasures your memories as they become more precious in the following months and years to come. May the God of tender mercy and peace be with your family. And remember Jesus said " I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though the dies, will come of life.

For Phil...best known for his role as business tycoon Asa Buchanan in the ABC soap opera "One Life to Live.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

The man could act, and in his roles he chose. The full characters came out very vibrant. He put his all, and I am 54 years of age this year I will be 55, and sometimes I love to hate some characters he played. He made the roles so real to get mad at times. Will be missed, but I will get to watch reruns of this man. Glad he had the years on film. Knowing the family and friends will be missing a great actor. May your family know that Angels and Great Powers of Almighty have him now. Thanks for the years of taping this fine Gentle heart of an Actor. Oklahoma 73439-8545

I have watched "One Life to Live" faithfully for over 35 years. I remember coming home from high school in the 70's and my Mom would let me and my 3 sisters watch the Soap, putting off our homework until it was over. I still, to this day, put off most of my chores to watch, or tape it.

My fondest memory is when I used to see Phil Carey doing the Granny Goose commercials. It probably boosted the sales of the potato chip business with our family!

And, as for Clint Ritchie, he was an amazing Dad on the show, and had the good old fashion Texas manners that came along with his role. They will both be living in the hearts of Soap Opera Fans, Forever, and as long as the "Show Must Go On"...as they would have seen it!

May the two Cowboys ride off into the sunset together and remain in our hearts and memories.

My prayers to the family who were lucky enough to have Phil as their Dad, and friends who shared the screen with him.

I learned of the passing of Clint Ritchie today in the tribute at the end of One Life to Live's airing. Upon searching I also learned of Phil Carey's passing. My heart is broken yet again and the passing of these actors, who almost became a part of my family, as I have been a fan of One Life to Live since being married nearly 39 years ago. My deapest condolences to both of their families and friends. Now we all must hold on to the wonderful memories they shared with each and every one of us. They will live on in our hearts forever.

I'm sure his loved one's are proud and will miss him terribly. I know that I missed him and was very sad he left the show. I feared for his health at that time, and see that my thinking was founded, as he was ill. My heart goes out to the Carey family. Phil made OTTL. He was the reason I watched OTTL as a teen and college student. Actors should watch and learn from Phil. Though Asa was a tyrant he was funny and lovable. From what I read the show wanted Phil to be a copycat of JR Ewing but he wound up making television history. He made the role his own and the show has never been the same without him. Good job Phil. RIP.
