Clater, Sr.
Daniel Clark Clater, Sr., age 63, of Front Royal, died Tuesday, September 23, 2008, at home.
Mr. Clater was born November 30, 1944, son of the late Jesse Clark Clater and Mary Lucy Jenkins Clater. He was a retired 1st Sergeant for the U.S. Army, having served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion, Giles B. Cook Post# 53, the V.F.W. Post 1860, and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge# 829. He was married to the late Barbara Clater.
He is survived by a daughter, Lisa M. Oliver and her husband, Tim, of Front Royal; two sons, Daniel C. Clater, Jr., and his companion, Samantha Markley, of Front Royal and Troy A. Clater and his wife, Stacy, of Front Royal; seven grandchildren, Cody A. Clater, Trey A. Clater, Trent Clater, Danielle Burke, Tyler Ray, Brandon Burke, and Nathan Burke; three nieces, Mary Catts and her husband, Brian of Rixeyville, Melissa "Missy" Gooden and her husband Todd, of Boston, Va., and Shannon "Missy" Gillispie and her husband, Mike, of Front Royal; a nephew, Bobby Allen Williams and his wife, Pam, of Front Royal; and a former spouse and special friend, Juanita Clater and her children, Rodney Allen Burke and Gidget Ray, all of Front Royal. He was predeceased by a brother Kenneth "Kenny" Clater.
Pallbearers will be Rodney Allen Burke, Tommy Williams, Gene Adams, David Smoot, Bobby Allen Williams, Mike Pullen, Sr., Jim Williams, and Kevin Williams.
The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, conducted by Sammy Campbell. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery with military honors being provided by VFW Post 2123.
Immediately following the service, all are invited to join the family for a time of food and fellowship at the V.F.W. Post 1860, 1847 N. Royal Ave., Front Royal, VA 22630.
Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601, or St. Judes Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Judes Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or the V.F.W. Post 1860, 1847 N. Royal Ave., Front Royal, VA 22630.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Maddox Funeral Home of Front Royal, Va.

My heartfelt sympathy to Dan's family. He and I served together @ Ft. Sam and Vietnam. I saw him about two years ago and enjoyed talking over the good times. I met his family and he spoke of how lucky he was to have them. Dan is a good man and an exceptional soldier. I think of him often and I will miss him. Take care Dan.
