DORIS BATSON GROVES Doris Batson Groves, 92, of Hampstead passed gently from her earthly life on Monday, May 30, 2016 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born May 27, 1924 in Pender County, the daughter of Robert J. Batson Sr. and Ethel Batson. Also, along with her parents, Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Coleman in 1965, her husband, Hildred "Hill" Thomas Groves in 1992; sisters, Joan McMillan and Betty Lou Yarbrough; and brother, Robert Batson Jr. Doris is survived by her daughter, Joyce Carter (Joe); sons, James C. Coleman (Dot) and William Ray Coleman; grandchildren, Angela Carter, Joey Carter (Cathy), Holly Howell (Bernard), Gwen Campbell (Mike), Ashley Coleman, and Aaron Coleman (Tania); six great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; sister, Gladys B. Orr (Earl); brother Harry Batson (Wana); dearest friend, Elbert Davis; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Doris was a faithful member of Blakes Chapel Advent Christian Church and Cape Fear Chapter 346 Order of the Easter Star. Not only was Doris a beloved wife and wonderful mother, grandmother and sister, but a generous friend to all who knew her. With her radiant smile Doris brought a great deal of grace, goodness and love into this world. Doris was blessed with a God given talent in music. In addition to playing the piano, she sang in several quartets, beginning at the Vista Baptist Church in Hampstead and lastly with the Waymakers. A life long Christian, Doris spread the Word through music. Her joy in life will not be forgotten by those around her. The family will receive friends at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2016 at Blakes Chapel Advent Christian Church with the service beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Rev. Steve Spearing and Rev. Danny Justice will conduct the service. Burial will follow in Barlow Vista Baptist Church Cemetery with Order of the Eastern Star rites. I am sorry to learn of Doris's passing. I remember her as always joyful and laughing. Daddy thought so much of Doris and Cecil and was close to Jimmy and Ray who also loved to laugh and joke around like their parents. I remember Joyce laughing and talking like the others. I know you will miss your Mother in many ways as time goes on, but you have great memories and The Lord's promises to sustain you. May God Bless and keep you.
