Carl L. Thompson, Jr.

Carl L. Thompson, Jr., 84, Orlando, passed away May 13, 2011. He was born April 12, 1927, to Carl and Beulah Hollingsworth Thompson of Tallahassee, Florida. Even after 55 years in Orlando, Mr. Thompson considered Tallahassee his "hometown." He graduated from Leon High School and joined the Navy in 1944. He served in the Pacific until 1946 - the end of WWII. He graduated from FSU in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. While attending FSU, he was a member of the Gold Key fraternity for leadership and a charter member of the Florida Gamma chapter of Phi Delta Theta. Later, he served on the alumni board for FSU. He attended Law School at the University of Florida, graduating in 1956. After moving to Orlando, Mr. Thompson practiced law as a sole practitioner for 50 years. He was a member of the University Club of Orlando and was active in civic affairs. Mr. Thompson was an early member of Christ the King Episcopal Church of Orlando. As a member of the vestry, he helped raise funds for the new church and served as a Boy Scout leader. Mr. Thompson was a member of the Masonic Orlando Lodge #69.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sara Brewer Thompson; daughter, Jean Keith Thompson; son, Stephen B. Thompson; and brother, James Thompson of Tallahassee, Florida. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Thompson was a wonderful man. I met him when I was only three when he helped my mom by giving her a job and a place to live. He was always kind to my brother and me when we visited the office. He always made sure we had a gift when it came to birthdays and holidays when money was tight. And he made the best hushpuppies that I have ever tasted. He will be greatly missed. I pray for continued peace and strength to all his family in this time of loss.
