Mabel Watson Shaw Mabel Watson Shaw, 66, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at the Capital Regional Medical Center after a courageous and lengthy battle with breast cancer. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. EST Saturday, Jan. 12, at St. John's Episcopal Church. A reception will be held at the church following the service. Graveside services for the family will be at a future time. Born in Tampa, Mabel has lived in Tallahassee most of her life. She retired from Tallahassee Community College where she served as the director of Library Services. During her tenure she oversaw the design and building of a new library facility, which is currently in use. The author of many articles in professional library journals, she was widely respected in the field of library science. A visionary, she insisted on the inclusion of computer technology in the new facility. Miss Shaw was a 1959 graduate of Leon High School and received her Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) in Anthropology, Master of Science and advanced masters' degrees in library science from Florida State University. She was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority, Phi Beta Kappa, Phil Kappa Phi, Beta Phi Mu and Phi Alpha Theta. Mabel was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she was also a member of The Order of the Daughters of the King. Also active in the community, she was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Florida State Extra Point Club and the Tallahassee Music Guild. A devoted sister and aunt, she is survived by her sisters, Ellen Lloyd (husband Gary) of Tallahassee and Edie Stone (husband Bill) of Jasper, Ga.; nephews William Hall (wife Stephanie) of Jasper, Ga., and Weston Hall (wife Kiersten) of Jasper, Ga.; and grandniece Sydney Hall and grandnephew Will Hall, both of Jasper, Ga. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex G. Shaw, and her nephew, Kevin Lloyd of Tallahassee. Flowers or memorial contributions to Covenant Hospice in Tallahassee or Susan G.
