George A. "Bo" Strom Jr.

George Strom Obituary

George A. "Bo" Strom, Jr., 78, of Shrewsbury, died Friday, April 4, 2008 at the UMass-Memorial Medical Center, Worcester, after a short illness.

He leaves his wife and best friend of 44 years, Bernardine C. (Rourke) Strom; two daughters: Martha Strom of Waltham, and Jane Corriere and her husband U.S. Navy Cmdr. Michael A. Corriere of Clarksville, MD; a son, George F. Strom and his wife Natasha Strom of Charlestown; seven grandchildren: Ryan, Meghan, Sean, Brendan, and Mike Corriere, and George Liam and Luke Strom; three sisters: Marilyn, wife of William Sullivan of Billerica, Donna, wife of Louis Robillard of Chelmsford, and Ruth Murphy of Woburn; a brother, John, husband of Georgette Strom of Ansonia, Conn. and many nieces and nephews.

George was born in Framingham, son of the late George A. and Kathryn (Bradford) Strom. He has lived in Shrewsbury for more than 40 years.

After graduating from Howe High School in Billerica in 1947, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and soon transferred to the newly formed U.S. Air Force. During his five years of military service, he was based in Okinawa and Tokyo for 3 1/2 years, including active duty at the start of the Korean War.

While in the Air Force, George took courses at Sophia University, a Jesuit college in Tokyo. After working for Raytheon as a technical illustrator, he entered Boston College in 1955 and graduated in 1958. He was a proud and active B.C. Eagle, and was eagerly looking forward to his 50th college reunion this Spring. He rarely missed a Boston College home football game over the past 30 years.

George had a long career in Sales and Marketing for major truck leasing companies across the Eastern United States. He worked with Hertz, Avis, LendLease, National Car and Truck Rental, and Fleet Management Associates with home offices in Boston, Worcester, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Long Island, N.Y., Cleveland and Baltimore. He never retired and worked in recent years in sales for the Kay-Gee Sign & Graphics Co. in Auburn.

Bo believed strongly in the value of education. He was a former trustee of the Eagle Hill School in Hardwick. He was a longtime elected Shrewsbury Town Meeting member, from 1981 to present. He was elected Trustee in 1985 and was the current Chairman of the Board of the Shrewsbury Public Library.

He enjoyed golf and played many years in the Juniper Hill Golf Course Friday Night League. He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Shrewsbury and American Legion Post 234 in Northboro. He loved Cape Cod and enjoyed many afternoons with family and friends at Corporation Beach in Dennis.

Calling hours are Wednesday, April 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Thursday, April 10 from the funeral home with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shrewsbury Public Library, 609 Main St., Shrewsbury 01545.
