Louis Merola Obituary

Louis C. "Gigi" Merola, 80, of Worcester died peacefully Tuesday, April 22, 2008, in the Shrewsbury Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. Louis is survived by his wife of fifty seven years Naureen (Roche) Merola, a son James L. Merola of Boston, two daughters Susan F. Mobilio and her husband Mark of Holden, and Patricia A. Merola of Milford, Ct. two grandsons; Michael J. and Joseph P. Mobilio, and two sisters Lillian Bolduc and Clara Merola both of Worcester, and many nephews and nieces. A brother John Merola and a sister Mary DelGreco predeceased him.

Louis was born in Worcester, son of the late Nicholas and Lucia (Pomponio) Merola and lived here all his life. He was a graduate of Worcester Boys Trade School, and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. "Gigi" was a Mechanic for the City Of Worcester Police Department for over twenty years before he retired. He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church, the East Side Post #201 American Legion, the Disabled American Veteran's, the Brown Square, and Columbus Civic Clubs, and also the Biscee Club. "Gigi" played semi pro football for the Worcester Maple Leafs in his younger years. He enjoyed a good fishing trip, was a skilled woodworker, and loved to cook. He will be missed by his family and friends. The family would like to thank Kelly Pickett, and Beverly Corrado and other members from the UMASS Memorial Hospice for their kindness and compassion shown to "Gigi" and his family during his illness.

The funeral will be held Friday April 25, from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in the Church of St. Margaret Mary, 75 Alvarado Ave. Calling hours will be held Thursday (tonight) from 5-8PM in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. THE FAMILY REQUESTS FLOWERS BE OMITTED and contributions made to the UMASS Memorial Hospice, 650 Lincoln St., Worcester, MA 01605. Members of the East Side Post 201 will meet at 7PM to perform their ritual.
