John Hopkins Obituary

John "Jack" L. Hopkins, 81, of Shrewsbury, formerly of Southborough, died June 1, 2008 at his home after a short illness. He was the husband of Susan (Wiils) Hopkins for the past 54 years.

Mr. Hopkins was a US Navy veteran serving in WWII, and a graduate of Suffolk University of Boston. As a young man he worked for Prudential Insurance Co. and later owned and operated his own insurance agency for 10 years, prior to merging with Carlson Daniels Insurance of Westborough from which he retired in 1994. He was an active member of St. Mark's Church of Southborough and a 45 year member and past president of the Southborough Rotary Club. In 1977 he was nominated as Citizen of the Year. He adopted the Rotary Club motto as his own, "Service Above Self", believing that serving one's community was more important than self-gain.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his three children: Stephen Hopkins, of Worcester; Gail McCaffrey and her husband Michael of Norfolk; David Hopkins of Uxbridge; a brother, William Hopkins and his wife Lois of Harwich; five grandchildren: Joshua, Justin, and Jessica Hopkins and Kayla and Jill McCaffrey.

A memorial service will be held on June 12, at 11 AM at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 27 Main St. Southborough. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to: U Mass Memorial Hospice, 650 Lincoln St, Worcester, Ma. 01605 or American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St. Framingham, Ma 01701 Arrangement are under the direction of Morris Funeral Home, Southborough
