Leonard Thomaris Obituary
Mr. Leonard Thomaris, age 87, of Boca Raton, FL and formerly of Potsdam, NY, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2008 at the Heartland Rehab Center in Boca Raton, FL.
Arrangements are with the Garner Funeral Home in Potsdam, NY. An Orthodox funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Potsdam, NY with Father Dean Paleologos, Dean of the St. Spyridon Cathedral in Worcester, MA. Burial will follow the service at Bayside Cemetery in Potsdam. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Contributions in Mr. Thomaris' memory can be made to the St. Spyridon Cathedral Family Center at 102 Russell Street, Worcester, MA 01609; St. Mark's Church at 2100 Northwest 51st, Boca Raton, FL 33431, or Hospice by the Sea at 1531 West Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, FL 33486.
Mr. Thomaris is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Thomaris, of Boca Raton, FL; one son, William L. Thomaris of Palm Harbor, FL; one daughter, Mrs. Celeste and Demitri Moschos of Worcester, MA; two grandchildren, Mrs. Kristin and Jerry Swon of New York, NY; and Thomas W. Moschos of Boston, MA.
Mr. Leonard Thomaris was born on October 11, 1920 in Potsdam, NY to William Thomaris and Urania Dokianos. He was a graduate of Potsdam High School and of Clarkson College of Technology in 1943 with a Business Administration degree. In the Second World War, he served in the United States Army Signal Corp. from 1943-1945. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home and was married to Mary Fundoukos on July 7, 1946 in Akron, OH at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. He worked in his father's restaurant for a few years and then he bought an Insurance Agency in 1948. He was the owner and operator of the Thomaris Insurance Agency until 1983 when he sold it. Prior to his retirement, he was a business leader in Potsdam and a supporter of the Clarkson Hockey Program. Mr. Thomaris and his wife moved to Florida in 1985 and returned from time to time for summers.
Mr. Thomaris was a member of the Potsdam County Club, the BPOE Elks Lodge in Potsdam, the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, the Mason's and the Greek organization AHEPA. Online condolences can be sent to
