Donald Smith Obituary

Donald "Smitty" E. Smith, Sr. of 6 Diane Ave., surrounded by his loving family passed away peacefully on Aug. 12, at UMASS Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Smitty is survived by his wife, Ernestine (Blanchard) Smith of 54 years. He was the loving and devoted father of daughter, Debra Smith-Fealy and her husband Peter of Portland, ME; two sons: Donald E. Smith, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Charlton and Scott Smith of Fall River. Very proud of his four grandchildren, he leaves: Shawn, Kyle and Ashley Smith and Meaghan Sheehan, and two great grandchildren: Jordan and Aryanna Rose. Also surviving are two brothers: Richard Warren of Millbury, Russell Smith of Spencer and a sister, Edith Searles of Auburn.

Smitty was born in Vinalhaven, Maine, son of the late Theron and Harriet (Hopkins) Smith and lived most of his life in Auburn. He attended Boy's Trade School in Worcester and later became a truck driver for several companies, retiring from ABF in 1997. He was a proud, longtime member of Teamsters Union Local 170 and a loyal and dedicated life long member of the Auburn/Webster Lodge of Elks #2118, where he was Chaplain for many years.

After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, watching his grandsons baseball and football games, working in his garden, playing golf and most of all helping out at the Elk's Lodge when needed and working Bingo.

Smitty was known for his quick smile, vibrant personality and kindness. He will be loved and sadly missed by family and all to whom he touched through life.

The family gives a special thanks and appreciation to all the staff at UMASS Memorial on West One for their excellent care and compassion towards Smitty and family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5-8 PM on Friday, August 15th in Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. The Auburn/Webster Lodge of Elks will perform a ritual at 6:30 PM. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Auburn/Webster Elks Scholarship Fund, 754 Southbridge St., Auburn, MA 01501. For directions or to leave a message of condolence, please visit
