Fred Windover Obituary

Fred Barnicoat Windover II, of Williamstown, a well known longtime resident of Northern Berkshire and Southwestern Vermont, died Friday in Pownal by suicide as a result of bipolar disorder. He was 47.

Born July 13, 1961 in Durham, North Carolina, the son of Fred A. and M. Joan McLelland Windover, he came with his family to Williamstown at the age of seven. He was educated in local schools there, and graduated from Mount Greylock Regional High School. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts.

Blessed with an affable and gregarious personality, he was primarily employed in sales. For several years he was employed by Sprague Products Company in North Adams and in California. Following his tenure with Sprague, he was employed by the Patten Corporation for several years. He subsequently spent several years as a regional veterinary pharmaceutical sales representative with Bayer Corporation, USA. While with Bayer, he resided in West Brookfield and North Brookfield, and moved to Bennington four years ago. Most recently, he was a teacher at Reid Middle School in Pittsfield.

He frequently attended church services at the Second Congregational Church in South Williamstown. He loved people, and cared deeply for their welfare. He served as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

Agriculture was his avocation, and he especially enjoyed raising and caring for livestock. Many of the animals he raised he subsequently gave to neighbors and friends. Beginning as a teenager, he at times took on part time employment on local farms, most recently at Crickett Creek Farm in South Williamstown. An avid outdoorsman, he had a lifelong love of fishing, and he regularly fished small and obscure streams, the existence of which many local anglers were unaware.

He was one of a politically active family, and was named for his paternal grandfather, the late Fred B. Windover of North Adams, who was a long time City Council member there. Following in the elder Windover's footsteps, the younger served as a selectman in the town of North Brookfield for three years.

Besides his parents, of Boston, he leaves a son, Fred C. Windover aged 13, and daughter, Charlotte B.Windover aged 9, and his former wife, Carol Williams Windover, all of Bennington, Vermont; two brothers, Caleb M. Windover of New York City and Tucker H. Windover of Arlington, Massachusetts; a sister, Hannah M. Quinn of Dudley, Massachusetts; his partner, Laurie Connell of Bennington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for Fred Windover will be Thursday August 21, 2008 at 11:00AM at the Second Congregational Church in South Williamstown.  Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA are Wednesday from 4-7 PM.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the South Williamstown Community Association through the funeral home.

Fred's light shone very brightly, though sadly, sporadically. It is our hope that his obituary may point other potentially troubled souls to seek help. To all who loved him, and most particularly to Fred and Carol's beloved and beautiful children, Fritz and Charlotte - strength, courage, comfort. God is with you.

Words can be so inadequate in expressing sympathy. Please know that your family is in our thoughts and prayers. We knew Fred, Carol, Fritz and Charlotte when they lived in North Brookfield. His smile could light up a room and his laughter infectious. It was also very evident that he cared about others very deeply. We will always remember him fondly.

God Bless,

I was extremely shocked and saddened to hear about Fred's untimely death. My mother left me a message with my son and I received it too late to attend his wake. I will never forget his special smile and his laugh. He had an infectious laugh. I ran into him a few years ago at a play at the Mount Anthony High School. We chatted and he looked happy to me. I am glad Fred allowed me to be a part of his life all those years ago and I know that he will be terribly missed by all that knew him. With my deepest and most sincere sympathy to you Fred and Joan and to your entire family. Words cannot express nor really ease your pain only the love that you share together and your wonderful memories of F.B. and his larger than life personality will help sustain you during this terrible time, with my deepest regrets for your horrible loss, I am sincerely,
Becky (Bratcher) Gijanto, Pownal, Vermont

We're saddened by your loss. We knew Fred during his years living in West and North Brookfield. He always wore a smile and could see the bright side of any situation. I recall seeing him march with the other selectmen in the Memorial Day Parade - dressed as nicely but wearing work boots! A real down to earth guy.

Our sympathies especially go out to Fred's children, Fritz and Charlotte.

He was my favorite teacher. He always helped me with my work. He never usually yelled at me, and he always had a joke, that why he was my favorite teacher.

August 19, 2008

Not how did he die, but how did he live?
Not what did he gain, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not, what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away.

God Bless

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of Fred. He is a part of my memories, going back to the very day my family and I arrived in Williamstown, in March of 1976.

Fred was very close to my Dad, Ken Brown, for years...

My mom just called to tell me the very sad news. How well I remember F.B., having babysat for him and Caleb and Tucker most every Friday night throughout my high school years. (Sorry Hannah, you weren't born yet...) Putting all three boys to bed in their "pretend jammies" (which would've looked an awful lot like daytime clothes if anyone had checked!) reading books aloud, playing Parcheesi, running around the backyard and climbing trees... Fred and Joan - my most heartfelt sympathy to you both. Your entire family is in my prayers... much love, Beth Drummond Casey

The first time I met Fred he made me smile and every time after that. He walked into our office 10 minutes before closing and said, you don't need to go out to a cold car. Asked for our keys, went out started the cars and scraped off the snow. Always talking about his family and children. Remembering that we loved Lemon Squares from the Store at 5 Corners and bringing them when he came in. To his family: knowing Fred added joy to our days, he will be missed.
