Paul Sardagnola Obituary

Retired Worcester Fire Department Deputy Chief, Paul F. Sardagnola, 80, of Duxbury, MA and Delray Beach, Florida, passed away Monday, September 8th 2008 in St. Vincent Hospital after a brief illness.

Paul is survived by his wife and devoted partner of 58 years, Norma F. (Perotto) Sardagnola; two cherished children, Paul A. Sardagnola and his wife Donna of Shrewsbury, Margaret A. Sardagnola and her husband Thomas W. McLaughlin of Boca Raton, FL; three adored grandchildren; Christine A. Polcino of Arlington, VA, Anthony P. Polcino of Philadelphia, and Tricia Sardagnola of Shrewsbury; two brothers, Peter and Francis Sargent of Lithonia, GA,; Many nieces and nephews. Four brothers, Michael, Alphonse, John and Joseph Sardagnola, and two sisters Anna Chioda and Jeanne Shadbegian all pre deceased him. Paul was born in Worcester his parents were the late Antonio and Catherine (Roncone) Sardagnola. He grew up in Worcester, served in the U.S.Navy during World War II, and lived here until moving to Duxbury in 1990. Paul and Norma spent their winters in Delray Beach, Fl.

Paul was a Worcester Fire Fighter for 32 years, rising through the ranks retiring as Deputy Chief in 1986. He was appointed in 1955, promoted to Lieutenant in 1962, Captain in 1972, District Chief in 1975 and Deputy Chief in 1981. Paul spent most of his career in the South Division before becoming Deputy Chief.

Paul was a quiet man with a quick smile, known by his peers as one of the most sincere and dedicated officers in the Worcester Fire Department. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Firefighters Union Local 1009. The Worcester Fire Relief Association, the Worcester Fire Credit Union, the American Legion Post in Duxbury Mass, and the Green Harbor Yacht Club. He was also an enthusiastic golfer and sports fan.

The funeral will be held Thursday, September 11th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 10th in the funeral home.
