Norman Spratt Obituary

Norman N. Spratt, 80, formerly of Whitinsville and Cape Elizabeth, ME, passed away on Thursday, October 2, in the Jewish Healthcare Center, after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. He leaves his beloved wife of 55 years, Elizabeth D. (McGilton) Spratt.

In addition to his wife, he leaves four children and their spouses, Diane Stevens and John Thibodeau of Oxford, Deborah and Glenn King of Whitinsville, Barbara and Christopher Brown of Holden, and Norman (Skip) and Dawn Spratt of Berlin, NJ; eight adored grandchildren, Jessica Stevens of Silver Spring,MD, Katharine and Charles Rollins of Oxford, Rebecca and Brandon Brower of Dudley, Nathan King of Whitinsville, Philip and Chelsea Brown of Holden, and Andrew and Amanda Spratt of Berlin, NJ; one great-grandchild, Charles Rollins, III, of Oxford. He also leaves a brother, Stuart I. Spratt and his wife Eugenie of Culver City, CA, and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Whitinsville, he was the son of the late Gladys (Newton) and Norman I. Spratt. He was a graduate of Northbridge High School, Class of 1946, and Worcester Junior College, with an A.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering. He served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army Headquarters XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, NC.

He was employed by the Whitinsville Spinning Ring Co. beginning in 1954, and was plant superintendent from 1968 to 1977. He worked for Reece Corp. for 15 years, first in Waltham and later in Gorham, ME, as plant manager, retiring in 1992. After residing in Cape Elizabeth, ME for 14 years, he and Betty moved back to the area in 1994, and then to Briarwood Retirement Community in Worcester in 2004.

He was a lifelong member of the Whitinsville United Methodist Church serving as treasurer and trustee. He was a trustee of the Whitinsville Social Library, a corporator of Whitinsville Savings Bank, a member of the building committee of the W. Edward Balmer Elementery School, and a member and past president of the Whitinsville Kiwanis Club.

In Maine, he was an advisor at Southern Maine Vocational Technical College in South Portland. He was also a member of Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church and served as treasurer.

Norman was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid golfer. He loved to play pool and tennis. He will be greatly missed by his family.

The family would like to thank the Jewish Healthcare Center Fifth Floor staff and his caregivers for their compassionate care of Norman since February.

Calling Hours will be on Monday, October 6 from 6 to 8 PM in the Carr Funeral Home, 24 Hill St., Whitinsville. A Memorial Service celebrating Norman's life will be held Tuesday, October 7 at 11 AM in the Blackstone Valley United Methodist Church, 61 Linwood Ave., Whitinsville. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Blackstone Valley United Methodist Church, 61 Linwood Ave,. Whitinsville, MA, 01588, or to Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA, 01609.
