Anna Callan Obituary

Anna M. (Ward) Callan passed away peacefully at UMass-Memorial Hospital after a short illness surrounded by her family on Friday, October 10th.

Anne leaves five children, Maureen F. Binienda wife of Edward M. Binienda, Nancy T. and Barbara A. Callan, John W. Callan Jr. and Michael J. Callan; and her sister-in-law Barbara A. Callan. She also leaves her two grandchildren, Mairecait Binienda and Elizabeth Callan.

Anne was predeceased by her husband, John W. Callan, and her parents Michael and Anna (Grady) Ward.

Anne was born in Worcester on August 6, 1929, and graduated from South High School in 1947 and Ward School of Business Science.

Anne worked for several years as a secretary for the Department of Social Services, and for 30 years in the Worcester Public Schools, retiring from Gates Lane School.

For more than the last 10 years, Anne has been a devoted "cuddler" to babies in the Neonatal Unit at the UMass-Memorial Hospital, where Anne loved to sing Irish lullabies to every baby.

Anne loved to knit, read books in the sunshine on her porch, and join in many conversations over a cup of tea with her family and friends.

Anne's family was the focus of her life, where her home was always the center of holiday celebrations.

Calling hours are Monday, October 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Tuesday, Oct. 14 from the funeral home with a Mass at NOON in St. George's Church, 38 Brattle St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Callan House, in care of Seven Hills Foundation, 81 Hope Ave., Worcester 01603.

We are so very sadden to find out about the loss of your mother. Our hearts and prayers are with you all at this time. Please accept our deepest sympathies and let your memories of your mom bring you happiness. I remember the times i would sit with your mom on her deck over a coffee or soda and have little talks of just about anything. She was so caring and giving and a wonderful lady.
