Elizabeth McCarthy

Elizabeth (Gray) McCarthy of Southgate, Shrewsbury and formerly of Worcester, died Sunday, October 19, 2008 in the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester.

Her husband of 48 years, Attorney Andrew F. X. McCarthy, died in 1998. She leaves three daughters, Maribeth M. DiPietro wife of John J. DiPietro of Holden, Catherine McCarthy Ho wife of James K. Ho of Newton and Ann M. Green wife of James G. Green Jr. of West Hartford, Conn.; nine grandchildren, Maria and Christina DiPietro, Alexander, Elizabeth, Daniel and Katherine Ho, and Julia, Deirdre and Andrew Green, two sisters, Catherine Kennedy and Helen D. Harrahy, both of Worcester, nieces and nephews. Her sisters, Sister Mary Dolora Gray S.P. and Ann B. Gray, predeceased her.

Mrs. McCarthy was born in Worcester, daughter of Thomas and Catherine Gray. She has lived in Shrewsbury the past 10 years.

She graduated from Ascension High School and Worcester State College. She earned a master's degree in History and International Relations from Clark University.

Before her marriage, Mrs. McCarthy taught Latin at the former Dix St. Prep School in Worcester.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish and its Guild of Our Lady, and the Notre Dame Alumnae Assn.-Ascension Chapter.

She traveled extensively and was a devoted Red Sox fan. She especially enjoyed vacationing at her home on Cape Cod.

Calling hours are Tuesday, October 21 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Wednesday, October 22 from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester.
