Robert Hermes Obituary
Mr. Hermes was born in Fitchburg, on July 1, 1920 son of the late Nishan and Nellie (Pond) Hermes. He was a 1938 graduate of Gardner High School. He later graduated from Worcester Industrial Tech Institute in 1940 and from WPI School of Industrial Management in 1963. He served with the US Navy 11th Sea Battalion from 1941 thru 1944. Mr. Hermes worked for Morgan Construction Company of Worcester as a sales engineer from 1940 thru 1972 and the Birdsboro Corporation in PA as a sales manager from 1972 thru 1979. Mr. Hermes also worked for the Ashlow Corporation of England, as president of US Engineering in Reading PA. from 1979 thru 1983 and Morgardshammar of Sweden, as a sales manager in Charlotte 1983-1989. He retired in 1989 after 49 years in the steel industry.
Mr. Hermes was a member of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, The Institute of Roll Design, Worcester Power Squadron, 58 year member of the Hope Lodge of Masons, Gardner, and the Cedarwood Country Club. Robert was an avid Golfer.
Mr. Hermes is survived by his wife, Jean P. (Parker) Hermes of Charlotte; two sons, Stephen D. Laurie-Hermes of Tewksbury, MA, and Glenn A. Hermes of Canandaiqua, NY; two grandchildren, Wendy Hermes of California, and Gregory Hermes of Georgia; and one stepson, James King of Virgina.
You are invited to attend the calling hours in the Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St., Gardner, MA, on Friday October 24, from 10 AM-1 PM. Burial will be in Forrest Hills Cemetery, Fitchburg, Friday October 24th at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers donations in Robert's memory may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th, Charlotte, NC, 28204.
