Rita Rice Obituary

Rita K. (McMenemy) Rice, of Stoneville Heights, known as "Auntie Rita" to many, died Tuesday, October 28th in Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after an illness.

Her husband, Paul V. Rice, Sr. died in 1972. She leaves her longtime companion, Richard C. Valiquette of Auburn; her five children, Paul V. Rice, Jr. and his wife Jean of Auburn, John J. Rice, Sr. of Worcester, Timothy M. and his fiancé Dottie Jeanne of Whitinsville, Rosemary Lesinski and her husband Michael of Mashpee, and Mariellyn Abbott and her husband Dana of Ayer; her two brothers, Francis and Bernard McMenemy, both of Worcester; her sister, Joan Dolan of West Boylston; her 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Walter, Robert, George and William McMenemy, and Ann Horne, Mary Conant and Carol Jordan. She was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Walter J. and Anna M. (McKeown) McMenemy and has lived in Auburn nearly all of her life. She graduated from South High School, Class of 1944 and the Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing in 1948.

Mrs. Rice owned and operated the former Auntie Rita's Nursery School in Auburn for many years. She then worked as an agent and broker for Century 21 Maher Real Estate in Auburn. Rita then returned to nursing working in the Pediatric Unit of Saint Vincent Hospital, and later for several years at the Glavin Regional Center in Shrewsbury before retiring. She was a member of North American Martyrs Parish, a member and past president of the Auburn Woman's Club, and volunteered as a nurse for the Auburn Notables Drum and Bugle Corps and for the Special Olympics. She was also a CCD teacher and a Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 101.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, Oct. 31st from 4-7 PM in Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, November 1st from the funeral home with a Mass celebrated at 11 AM in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Dr., Auburn. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn.
