Dominic Mallary Obituary

Dominic "Dom" Mallary of Worcester and formerly of Berlin passed away Friday, December 5th at Boston Medical Center, surrounded by family and the friends who loved him so much. Dom, 24, died unexpectedly, after inadvertently being injured during a performance of his band, Last Lights, at Boston University.

Dom was born September 22, 1984. He grew up in Berlin, MA and later in Worcester. He graduated Tahanto Regional High School in 2003, and just last month enjoyed seeing old friends at an informal five year reunion. Dom attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and graduated from Emerson College with honors with a degree in Writing, Literature and Publishing in 2007. Prior to graduation he completed a summer internship for the Telegram and Gazette. For five years, while in school, Dom worked at the Berlin Center Store, a job he loved because it kept him connected to Berlin, a place so close to his heart. He was working, currently, as a residential counselor at The Green House, a program for homeless mentally ill and substance abusing men in Worcester.

Dom was a poet, musician, and artist. He was the lead singer, lyricist and composer, for the band, Last Lights. Dom had been offered a record contract this week and at the end of the month had planned a tour of the Eastern US with his band. He was very happy and hopeful on the evening that he fell ill. Dom had dreamed of being a musician since he was a young teenager. He worked hard and consistently towards this goal, spending hours, practicing, writing songs, and attending to the administrative work of booking shows and tours. He was admired by his peers for his passionate approach to his music. He was a serious person with a passion for the things in which he believed. At the same time he was an example for all who knew him, demonstrating a joyful openness to new ideas, experiences, and people throughout his life. He cared about music not fame. He was a role model to many.

Besides music Dom was passionate about philosophy and writing. He leaves a bedroom in his mother's house crammed with books like a graduate school library. His favorite author was Guy Debord, the French situationalist.

Dom was planning on concentrating on his band for the next several years. His long term goals included going back to school, either graduate or medical school. He was a brilliant student.

All who knew Dom will miss seeing the wonderful things he would have done in the future. He gave so much to the world in his short 24 years and had so much more to give. Dom is survived by his parents, Helen and Pasquale Turano and Michael and Cindy Mallary. Also by his sisters, Elaine, Caroline, and Joanna, his step-brother Pasquale Turano, and his girlfriend of 3 years, Angela Fallavollita, whom he very much loved.

Mercadante Funeral Home and Chapel, 370 Plantation St. Worcester MA 01605, (508) 754-0486, is directing arrangements.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Dominic Mallary to Community Healthlink - The Green House, 19 King Street Worcester, MA 01610.

Dear Mike and family,
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your son Dom, and my heart goes out to you! I have 2 sons of my own about Dom's age, both living in Worcester, and helping with homeless and other folks struggling with various problems. Hearing at his funeral mass that Dom was, among the rest of his work, also taking time to help others in that way was very touching. My prayers and thoughts are with you in this time of terrible loss and grief.

To Dom's Family, I am truly, truly sorry.
I have never met him but have recently before his death become very interested in Last Lights. He was a great lyricist and performer and it's just horrible to have his dreams start to work out and have it end so short.

Like I said I've never met Dom but I felt like I should say something because I felt this was such a sad situation.

To Dom's Family,
I, too, lost my son suddenly, on Nov. 21st. He also, was a talented musician and lead singer in a band. Reading about your son and his qualities and talents- it's as though the two of them were twins! My heart and thoughts are with you.

Dom,

I'll never forget you. You were always such a great friend and inspiration, from kindergarten reading classes through senior year music theory and up until now. While I hadn't seen you in a few years, your music continued to inspire me, and I was always impressed at your skill and your ability to use music to communicate in ways more powerful than if you'd just used words.

My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and all your friends during this time.

Love you, and we'll miss you.

It was my privilege to be Dom's teacher at the Berlin Memorial School. His intellect was incredible; his thirst for knowledge of the world unquenchable. Speaking with him in the past year of a career in journalism, I imagined him in the rank of a senior columnist with the New York Times one day. We shall now have to be satisfied with the good he had done in only 24 years. Blessings to his family and close friends.

dom,

my third semester at college was the best. we hung out every day and every night, listening to music, arguing philosophically, or working together. i still laugh when i think about that white collar crime class we took on tuesdays at 1pm and you still had trouble getting there on time because you couldnt wake up in time. or the time we were talking about beer and you loudly proclaimed "I LOVE BUSCH" in the middle of the dining hall on what happened to be election day 2004.

i have so many memories that ill keep forever. the time we swam to cemetery island, only to be chased away by bugs, the time you dragged me out of bed to go to the hoosac tunnel during what you called my "vampire summer," or the countless shows we went to together, whether it was your band or not.

i love you and i miss you so much already.

Dom, Ill never forget all the amazing times we've had, from getting in trouble in 8th grade math, being lab partners in 10th grade chemistry (100ml of American pride), writing the ridiculous class plays, late night wendys, and even staying up till 4 in the morning playing heads up poker, and never wanting to stop because we always wanted to find who was better.

Your intelligence, talent, and ambition are truly inspiring, and I strive to lead a life with as much passion as yours. You always wanted to do great things with your life and have an impact on the world and those around you, and you truly did.

Dom was a friend of mine while at TRHS in Boylston, and while we took our separate roads from there, they intersected occasionally, whether at UMass or in Worcester. It was very saddening to hear of his passing over the weekend. I always enjoyed catching up with him and discussing ‘the state of things’ with him. It is both a privilege and a rarity to know someone of Dom’s intellectual, moral, and social character, and I will always remember him as a kind-hearted soul. I have not seen him in nearly 20 years but he was a delightful and so intelligent toddler and little boy when I took care of him then in my family day care. As we look back over time
We find ourselves wondering .....

Did we remember to thank you enough
For all you have done for us?
For all the times you were by our sides
To help and support us .....

To celebrate our successes
To understand our problems
And accept our defeats?
Or for teaching us by your example,
The value of hard work, good judgement,
Courage and integrity?

We wonder if we ever thanked you
For the sacrifices you made.
To let us have the very best?
And for the simple things
Like laughter, smiles and times we shared?

If we have forgotten to show our
Gratitude enough for all the things you did,
We're thanking you now.
And we are hoping you knew all along,
How much you meant to us.
