George Smith Obituary

George E. "Smitty" Smith, Jr. 82, of Worcester, died peacefully Monday, December 3, 2007 in the UMASS Medical Center University Campus surrounded by his loving family. George is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Leona M. (St. Denis) Smith, three sons, George E. Smith 111 and his wife Dina, of West Boylston, Kevin M. Smith and his wife Marie of Anchorage Alaska, James P. Smith and his wife Jennifer of Worcester, four daughters, Dorothy M. Stone and her husband Bradford of Holden, Susan L. Mesale and her husband John of Shrewsbury, Christine M. Hamm and her husband Joseph of Bradenton Florida, and Patricia A. Bergeron and her husband James of Spencer. George is also survived by three sisters, Marjorie Burns of Yarmouth, Ann Lafortune of Ludlow, and Maureen Beckwith of Marston Mills, twenty-three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

George was born in Worcester December 18, 1924, son of the late George Sr. and Mary (Gleason) Smith and lived here all his life.He was a graduate of St. Stephens High School and attended Northeastern University, Holy Cross College, and Vesper George Art Institute. George was an Engineer for the City of Worcester for 37 years before he retired. At one time he owned and operated his own land surveying company. He was a long time member of Our Lady Of The Rosary Church. George enjoyed Artistry, his work, and being with his family. He will be missed by his family and friends.

George's funeral will be held Thursday from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30AM. In Our Lady Of The Rosary Church, 25 Fales St. Calling hours in the funeral home are from 5-8PM on Wednesday. Burial will be in St. Johns Cemetery. I am so sorry to hear about Goerge, living across the street for so many years and being a part of the Smith family has been a blessing for me and my family.
