Susan Battaglini Obituary

SUSAN P. BATTAGLINI
Former Ithaca City School District teacher, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, died on August 30th, at home at the age of 68 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Susan was born on April 25th, 1940 in New York, NY, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward E. Haungs and sister of the late Marian Elizabeth King.
She received a Bachelor's in Education from SUNY Oneonta and a Master's of Science in Education from SUNY Cortland. She was a distinguished elementary school teacher at West Hill, Central and Cayuga Heights Elementary Schools. Cherished by her students and admired by her colleagues, she will long be remembered for her dedication. She served as an inspiration to former students and her extra efforts and dedication were respected and admired by many parents of the children whose lives she touched. By her example, she encouraged a lifelong love of learning which was inspired by her late father.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Gene; and her children, Christine Rosenberger and husband, Brian of Montgomery, New York, Susan Carulli and husband, Lee, of Baldwinsville, New York, and Kathleen Owens and husband, Michael of Sauquoit, New York; and her cherished grandchildren, Lauren, Matthew and Kyle Rosenberger, Alexandra and Gavin Carulli, and Kevin, Rachel and Nathan Owens.
Susan's devotion and generosity touched the lives of so many around her. After her retirement from the ICSD she volunteered to help students in need. Because of her great love of gardening, she also served as an educator and guide at the Cornell Plantations. Susan loved to travel with her husband and had many interests such as reading, cooking, gardening and boating. She was also a member of the Ithaca Yacht Club. She loved spending the winters in Jupiter, Florida with her husband, where she made many wonderful friends. Perhaps the greatest example of her devotion and generosity was to her children and grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at Moakley House, 213 Warren Road in Ithaca, on Sunday, September 7th, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to either: The Cornell Plantations, 1 Plantations Road, Ithaca, New York 14850; or the Sciencenter, 601 1st Street, Ithaca, New York 14850, where she spent many happy hours with her grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Bangs Funeral Home.

My family extends our deepest sympathy to you all for the loss of such an amazing and dear woman. Both of my sons (Jed and Luke) had Sue as their 3rd/4th grade teacher when she was at Central School. We all loved her dearly as one of the best and most outstanding teachers and as a genuinely wonderful person.
As an Ithaca elementary teacher myself, I learned so much and have always had the greatest admiration for Sue and all that she gave to her students, their families and the community. She will be greatly missed.
With best wishes from The Ostrom Family

To Kathy and the wonderful Battaglini Family,

I was saddened to hear of your mother's passing. I have such fond memories of her smile, her geniune embracing of all of us through our high school years, and of course her triumphs during those same years. She was and will continue to be an inspiration to all of us who face life's challenges.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
Peace and love,

When I picture Scotty, I see that smile and the set of her eyes, both so infectious and I can hear that laugh.
We were roommates when she student taught on campus and every day she came home with tales of a very naughty boy named David. Over the years we continued to laugh about him, guessing he was probably a US Senator or CEO of some large company.
Never once during her illnesses did she not mention Nurse Fuzzy and his devotion to her care. Their life was a love story that started in Oneonta in the '60s and will never end. Fuzzy and Scotty, you gave your daughters the most beautiful gift of all...your love and devotion to each other!
Scotty, you're in God's hands and there is no better place to be.
Love in AEB, Donna

Our love and prayers go out to Gene, his and Scotty's daughters and their grandchildren. Gene, you were Scotty's chief caregiver and husband is every sense of "in sickness and health". You were her rock as she became the care receiver. Scotty brought us all such joy by just being in her presence. Nothing protects us from the profound effect of losing loved ones and so we grieve but are comforted that she is once again whole. Scotty and I found two great guys at Oneonta and we cherish your friendship as well. Love, peace and prayers, Joan and Jim Sheehan

Dear Gene and Family,
We share your pain in the passing of a dear friend, Susan. We have to remember all the good times and we are sure she is looking down and thinking about them and smiling--all the dinners that we loved to have Enos and Murl share in the cost, the fun boat rides on the lake--when we had the jet boat, Kathleen wanted to go faster when we were already going 60 mph. We have many memories of Susan and we know that she is in a good place and she will be free of pain. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all the family members. We wish we could be with you at this time of sorrow. Love, Larry and Marge Ramsay

I remember moving in day, the very first day we met at Oneonta, and something clicked. Our friendship has lasted for 50 years; but, then we became "sisters of the heart,"too. I love you, dear friend and will never forget you or those wonderful memories we shared.

Scotty was a very special sister and friend. It's been so wonderful to be in touch almost 50 years after graduation. I can't imagine our Fall reunion without her, but I know she will be there in spirit. We will definitely celebrate her life and pray that Gene and her family will revel in special memories. Thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time.

Scotty was a special "sister", wife, mother, teacher and friend. I'll always remember the constant kindness and warmth she always displayed throughout all the years that I've known her. She will be missed but will always be remembered with love. I cannot be at the Memorial Service but my heart and prayers will be with Gene, family and friends.

My son Alexis Santi would not be the kind of person he is without the love and dedication Sue gave him during 3rd and 4th grade at Central Elementary. Her dedication and love for every student was extraordinary. Sue made my children LOVE school and learning. She also influenced me to be a better teacher as well. God give you strength at this very difficult time. It's so hard to lose someone so very special. She will never never be forgotten!

I offer my sympathy for Sue's family and friends during this difficult time. Sue was one of the biggest influences in my life. She was my master teacher at Central School 21 years ago and I was in awe of her relationship with her students. She let me explore without fear and taught me to make a community in my classroom. What a great gift her life was to so many people.

Mrs. B was one of my favorite teachers at CHES back in the 1980's -- I had her for both 2nd and 4th grades. I remember how excited I was when I found out that I'd have her for a second year, despite her mentioning that "second grade won't be as easy as fourth grade!" It was as much fun, though! I loved sitting in her log cabin during free reading time. Condolences and best wishes to her family.
