H. BELDEN "BARNEY" MARLETTE
GROTON - H. Belden "Barney" Marlette, of Beechwood Drive, Groton, passed away Friday, October 17, 2008, at the VA Medical Center, Syracuse.
Barney was born in Cortland, the son of the late Merle and Sara (Case) Marlette, and had been a Groton resident for most of his life. He was employed as a manager with Smith-Corona for over 30 years, and later was employed with Burns Security at Smith-Corona and at Borg Warner in Ithaca, retiring in 2006. He had served as the Mayor of the Village of Groton for four terms, from 1987 to 1995.
Barney was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, and had served as a B-17 Machine Gunner with the 351st Bomb Squad of the 100th Bomb Group in the European Theatre. He was discharged with the grade of Tech Sergeant, following his release as a Prisoner of War, and was a Purple Heart recipient.
Barney was a member of Carrington-Fuller American Legion Post 800 of Groton and the Cortland DAV Chapter 153. He was an avid Yankee baseball fan and was active with the Groton Little League and area Slow-Pitch teams for a number of years.
Surviving is his wife of 24 years, Diane Share Marlette; his five children, Scott (Vickie) Marlette of Enfield, Denise (James) Sedorus of Groton, Scott (Jessica) Carruthers of Naples, FL, Teri (Jeffrey) Evener of Groton, and Robert (Jan) Marlette of WI; 15 grandchildren; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jack and Marian Share of Woodlands, TX.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 21, at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Ave., Groton, with the Rev. Sam Neno officiating. Interment, with Military Honors, will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Groton. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.
