William Hume Obituary

WILLIAM T. HUME, DVM
FREEVILLE - William T. Hume, DVM, 84, of West Dryden Rd., Freeville, NY, died Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at the VA Medical Center in Syracuse, NY.
Born August 27, 1924 in Millinocket, ME, he was the son of the late Robert Marshall and Blanche Towne Hume. He attended Choate, Bowdoin College, Stanford University and was a graduate of Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 1954. While attending Stanford, he was drafted into the US Army Signal Corps, serving overseas from 1943 to 1946. Upon his return from the war, the Veterinary program had ended at Stanford, so he transferred to Cornell. Following graduation, he operated his own large and small animal veterinary practice in Dryden, later moving it to Freeville. He was proud to have received his 50 year pin from the F&AM. He loved animals and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing.
Dr. Hume is survived by his son, Towne Hume of Boston, MA; daughter, Jane Hume Short of Baltimore, MD; son, John W. Hume of Elkton, MD; son, William T. (Stephanie) Hume, Jr. of Freeville, NY; stepson, Eugene P. (Jan) Moon of Lansing, NY; grandchildren, Eric Nelson Short, Barbara Jane Short, Sarah Hume, Bradley Hume, Edward Weisberg and Amanda Moon; four nephews and several grand nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Dr. Hume was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Hume, on September 17, 2008; his son, Scott Hume in 1993; brother, Robert M. Hume, Jr.; and grandson, Eugene P. "Charlie" Moon, Jr.
Private Graveside Services with Military Honors provided by the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home Ritual Team will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. My uncle Bill always greeted me with his warm smile and many a funny story. He love to talk about hunting, always with one of his many pets or patents at his feet, he would talk and pet each one. He knew everyone by name. His gentle touch will be missed.

To the family of Doc Hume,
I remember him from coming into my Dad's store, Dingler's Market" in Etna years ago. He took take care of my dog, Sophie, when she got hit by a car. He always had a very pleasant dispostion. My prayers are with your family.

To the family of Dr. Hume, my memories are of warmth and love to all the dogs and cats we brought to him for care. He always had time for us. He will be greatly missed by many and all 4 legged friends. My prayers are with you.
