EVANS WILLIAM
BAILEY SR.
ITHACA - Evans William Bailey Sr., also known as the Mayor of Cleveland Ave., age 86 of Ithaca, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, died Saturday, October 20, 2007, at Cayuga Medical Center. Mr. Bailey was born April 2, 1921 in Carters Creek, Tennessee, a son of the late Tyree and Emma Bailey. Recently, he celebrated 60 years of marriage with Viola O'Daniels Bailey.
As a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, he will always be remembered for his ability to recall war stories. Prior to his retirement in 1985, he was a master machinist at Borg Warner, a member of the 25 Year Club and a member of the Automotive Local Union 1607; American Legion Post 1695; St. James AME Zion Church and a member of the Steward Board; Henry Highland Garnett Lodge #40. He was an avid gardener who grew beautiful roses. Mr. Bailey was the recipient of the 1996 Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Good Neighbor Annual Award.
Survivors include his wife, Viola Bailey; two daughters, Janet Bailey Cauthen and Kathy Bailey Milton; eight grandchildren, Jerome Prescott, James Bailey, Samuel "Mel" Cauthen, Jessica Scott, Unique L. LeFlore, Brandon, Lois and Ryan Watts; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Hardison; a niece and a nephew.
Mr. Bailey is predeceased by his son, Evans "Sonny" William Bailey Jr.; a sister, Ellen Smith and a brother, Clarence Bailey; a grandchild, Tanisha Brooks; a stepdaughter, Alma Jean Cole.
Friends and family may call Saturday, October 27, 2007, from 11:00 a.m. until time of 1:00 p.m. Funeral Service at St. James AME Zion, 116 Cleveland Ave., Ithaca. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Ithaca. If desired, memorials may be made to St. James AME Zion Church or to the American Cancer Society.

Bailey family,

I am sorry for your loss. How well I remember the "Mayor" of Cleveland Avenue from my childhood. The stories he used to tell, telling us to behave when we were outside playing. I also remember that home made wine that he gave my parents. He will be sorely missed.

Cleveland Ave won't be the same. I grew up across the street at 206 from Mr.Bailey and I remember the beutiful garden in the front of the house. My prayers are with Ms. Teet and the rest of the family. Know that God is with you in your time of need and that Mr. Bailey is in a better place.
