Dr. Leonard was an insipiring teacher. It was a real pleasure to have him as an advisor, 1959 - 1961. He made academic issues challenging and fun. I saw him last in 1976 as he and his wife were headed off xcountry in a camper. They were very happy.

Dr. Sam...what a great person! I only knew Sam for a short period of time. He was always caring and very giving. I was truly inspired by him...I'll miss him.

We were fortunate to have Sam as our neighbor for the past ten years. We will remember him with much fondness. We loved hearing his stories about his long and interesting life. He enjoyed his role as the neighborhood historian. We will hold Sam's memory in our hearts and take inspiration from his example of a life well lived.

He is still Dr. Leonard to me - a member of my Ph.D. committee and my teacher. It's been many years since last seeing him in 1960, but his lessons in endocrinology stayed with me throughout my scientific career. His humor and guidance will forever remain with me.

A wonderful man who made a significant contribution to my life and career. Great sense of humor and always that cigar with the ashes that never ruined an experiment.

I
met Sam when he was 95. I would drop by for visits occasionally and how
I loved to visit with him! His buddy, Ed come visit and Ari
von Tienhoven was another "regular" that made his day. He loved his
friends and his friends were great to him. He also loved his work and
research, old and new. He loved talking shop and loved to share an
opinion on the latest news/research. He loved the future. He also
enjoyed the past and present. He loved a good joke (naughty and nice).
He loved his wife, Olive, very much (I think I would have really
enjoyed her!) - and he loved his family. He was a gracious and kind
man. He had such life experience! He had quite a spirit about him! He
once told me I had "moxie" and after he explained it what it meant, I
thought "Bah, not me" -- but I always saw it in him. Sam Leonard had
moxie. I can't thank him enough for our friendship. I will always keep
him in my heart.

A colleague over many years, I shall miss Sam's booming voice and breathy laugh, not to mention the dozens of anecdotes of (often also passed along)the useful people that populated our lives when we worked together in the classic Department of Zoology; some of the more scatalogical gave Sam so much pleasure in the retelling! An old friend, - I shall miss him.

Sam,
You had a long and productive life. I always admired your energy and intelligence which was still sharp even at 100+ But now you can join Olive and I know you are happier.
